Eureka City Schools

Type: Full Time
Eureka City Schools Assistant Superintendent of Business Services
Lead Where Decisions Matter. Shape Systems That Directly Impact Students.
Eureka City Schools is seeking an experienced and practical leader to serve as our next Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. This Cabinet-level role oversees the financial and operational systems that support a TK–12 district with approximately 3,500 students and 600 staff members.
This position is well-suited for a leader who understands the dynamics of serving a regional and rural community, where resources are finite, decisions are visible, and the connection between operations and learner outcomes is immediate.
Business Services in Eureka City Schools is not a back-office function. It directly affects staffing, facilities, transportation, and the district’s ability to deliver on its priorities. Success in this role requires both long-term financial thinking and consistent, hands-on operational leadership.
The Role
As the District’s chief business official and a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet, you will lead and oversee:
Fiscal services, budget development, and multi-year financial planning
Accounting, auditing, and financial reporting
Facilities, maintenance, and long-term capital planning
Transportation and nutrition services
Risk management, compliance, and operational systems
You will serve as a primary advisor to the Superintendent and the Board of Education, translating complex financial realities into clear, actionable guidance to support sound decision-making.
Leadership Context
Eureka City Schools operates with a stable financial foundation while continuing to navigate long-term pressures facing districts across California, including rising costs, aging facilities, and ongoing fiscal demands.
At our size, there is very little distance between planning and implementation. Decisions made at the Cabinet level are felt quickly across the system. Success in this role requires the ability to:
Set clear priorities and stay focused on them
Consistently follow through across multiple departments
Communicate consistently with both internal teams and external stakeholders
What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a leader with experience as a Chief Business Official or in a senior business services role within a California public school system.
The ideal candidate brings:
Strong knowledge of California school finance, including LCFF and compliance requirements
Demonstrated experience with multi-year financial planning and budget development
The ability to lead and improve complex operational systems
Experience working effectively with governing boards and executive leadership teams
A leadership approach grounded in clarity, accountability, and consistency
Strong communication skills, with the ability to make complex financial information accessible and actionable
Equally important is an understanding of the opportunities and constraints of working in a smaller, regional district, where adaptability, responsiveness, and visibility are part of the role.
Why This Role
This position offers a level of access and influence that is increasingly rare in larger systems.
In Eureka City Schools, you will be a central decision-maker shaping the district’s financial direction and operational effectiveness. You will see the direct impact of your work across schools and departments, and work closely with district leadership without unnecessary layers.
This role is well-suited for an experienced executive leader who values both responsibility and visibility and is comfortable being directly connected to outcomes.
Compensation & Benefits
Eureka City Schools offers a comprehensive and competitive compensation package aligned with the scope and impact of this role.
Health Benefits: Full medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and eligible dependents
Retirement: Participation in CalPERS or CalSTRS (as applicable), with employer contributions
Paid Leave: Vacation and holiday schedule aligned with executive-level contracts
Additional Considerations: Professional development support, and flexibility to discuss select contract elements based on experience and district priorities
Why Eureka City Schools
Eureka City Schools offers a leadership experience that is both accessible and impactful.
Our size allows leaders to see the direct results of their decisions without the fragmentation sometimes found in larger districts. Cabinet members work in close partnership with the Superintendent and the Board, and that proximity creates real influence over the district's direction.
Schools are central to the community, and district leadership is visible and engaged. The organization is stable, with a clear commitment to continuous improvement and thoughtful decision-making.
For leaders seeking both professional challenge and quality of life, the Eureka region offers a unique combination of coastal environment, strong community identity, and access to outdoor recreation.
Experienced leaders who value both strategic responsibility and direct day-to-day impact are encouraged to apply.
This is an opportunity to lead work that is visible, meaningful, and essential to the success of every student we serve.

Masters Degree in business administration or related field preferred
