This individual will serve as a coach, educator, and mentor, fostering the personal, academic, and athletic development of student-athletes while building a culture of accountability, growth, and excellence. They will lead by example and consistently model the character, professionalism, work ethic, and leadership behaviors expected of student-athletes, coaches, and staff. In the role, they will establish clear ownership and accountability across the program, empowering staff and student-athletes to take responsibility for their respective roles while contributing to the collective success of the team.
Scope and Responsibilities
Provides strategic leadership, vision, and overall management of Texas Southern University's Men's Basketball program, with responsibility for competitive success, student-athlete achievement, program administration, fundraising, compliance, fiscal stewardship, and advancement of the University's mission and brand.
Texas Southern University Men's Basketball is one of the premier programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, with a proud tradition of conference championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, and distinguished student-athlete achievement. The University seeks a transformational leader who can build upon this tradition, elevate the program's national profile, and position the Tigers for sustained competitive excellence.
The Head Coach is expected to demonstrate success at the NCAA Division I level, including competitive achievement, academic excellence, strong APR outcomes, and a commitment to integrity, compliance, accountability, and sportsmanship.
Specific Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Strategic Direction
•Align the program with the University's mission and strategic priorities.
•Compete for Southwestern Atlantic Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.
•Maintain a nationally respected Division I program.
•Develop long-range strategic plans for growth and visibility.
Student-Athlete Development & Academic Success
•Promote academic achievement and APR success.
•Support student-athlete development and graduation.
•Foster accountability and leadership.
Compliance & Governance
•Ensure NCAA, Southwestern Atlantic Conference, Title IX, and University compliance.
•Report violations and maintain program integrity.
Recruiting & Roster Management
•Recruit high-caliber student-athletes.
•Utilize transfer portal, NIL, analytics, and roster management strategies.
•Maintain recruiting pipelines.
NIL & Modern Athletics Management
•Support NIL opportunities and compliance.
•Incorporate emerging trends and best practices.
Operations & Administration
•Manage program budget and resources.
•Oversee scheduling, travel, camps, and operations.
Staff Leadership & Evaluation
•Hire, supervise, mentor, and evaluate staff.
•Promote professional development and accountability.
Fundraising & External Relations
•Support fundraising and advancement initiatives.
•Engage alumni, donors, sponsors, and community stakeholders.
•Serve as an ambassador for Texas Southern University.
Key Selection Criteria
The Head Coach serves as the chief executive and strategic leader of the Men's Basketball program and is accountable for competitive success, student-athlete development, academic achievement, recruiting, compliance, fiscal stewardship, fundraising, personnel management, and community engagement.
Success in this position will be measured by sustained competitive achievement, conference and postseason success, academic performance, student-athlete development, compliance, fundraising effectiveness, sound fiscal stewardship, and positive representation of Texas Southern University.
•Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
•Seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible coaching experience.
•Demonstrated success as a head coach or senior assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level.
•Demonstrated success in recruiting, roster management, NIL initiatives, and transfer portal management.
•Commitment to NCAA compliance and student-athlete welfare.
Preferred Qualifications
•NCAA Division I head coaching experience.
•Master's degree in a related field.
