The Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Schools Office seeks a faithful, mission-driven, and experienced educational leader to serve as Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools. This senior leadership position supports the Superintendent in advancing the mission, identity, vitality, and operational excellence of Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Phoenix.
The successful candidate will be an active, practicing Catholic in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church and will bring significant experience in educational leadership, along with a deep personal commitment to the mission of Catholic education. Ideal candidates will have a record of effective leadership in educational settings that demonstrates the ability to support and strengthen Catholic schools.
Position Summary
To support the Diocese of Phoenix in its mission to encounter the living Christ, the Assistant Superintendent works with the Superintendent of the Catholic Schools Office to support, guide, and strengthen Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Phoenix through consultation, collaboration, policy guidance, leadership development, and problem-solving.
This position provides leadership and support in areas including Catholic identity, school administration, community relations, marketing and communications, special events, accreditation, personnel processes, recruitment, professional development, principal support, and collaboration with diocesan offices and school communities.
Essential Responsibilities
The Assistant Superintendent of Catholic Schools will:
Articulate a Catholic philosophy that permeates the schools through an emphasis on Catholic identity, Catholic culture, evangelization, and community of faith.
Advance the shared mission and vision of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Phoenix.
Maintain strong public relations within the community to enhance the image of Catholic schools and solicit support for the goals and objectives of the schools in the Diocese of Phoenix.
Work in close collaboration with the Superintendent and other Assistant Superintendent(s), including acting on their behalf in the event of their absence.
Oversee the development of marketing strategies and projects of the Catholic Schools Office and support diocesan Catholic schools in their promotional efforts.
Manage Catholic Schools Office website content and social media and work directly with the diocesan Communications Office on media events and projects.
Lead the planning, organization, and implementation of Catholic Schools Office events, including Night of Hope, annual appeals, Catholic Schools Week Mass/Rally, and other special events.
Serve as a liaison between the Catholic Schools Office and the Office of Mission Advancement for special events and projects.
Oversee the WCEA accreditation process with local schools and visiting teams.
Assist principals and pastors in hiring, supervising, and evaluating school personnel.
Oversee recruitment efforts for certified teachers and administrators.
Assist with the implementation and use of the Catholic Schools online employment system.
Oversee the New Teachers to the Diocese annual retreat.
In collaboration with the Superintendent and other Assistant Superintendent(s), provide one-on-one mentoring sessions for new principals.
Consult with pastors, principals, preschool directors, teachers, and school staff regarding school-related issues.
Facilitate, mediate, and provide direction in conflict management matters involving administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community members.
Plan and facilitate monthly principal meetings in collaboration with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent(s).
Oversee the implementation and revision of evaluation processes for teachers, administrators, and classified employees.
Plan and facilitate regular meetings with non-instructional school staff groups, including deans of discipline, counselors, health professionals, high school athletic directors, school technology coordinators, and others as needed.
In cooperation with the other Assistant Superintendent(s), plan and facilitate meetings with elementary and high school instructional staff groups, including assistant principals, campus ministers, librarians, and others as needed.
At the direction of the Superintendent, provide supervision and evaluation of principals at diocesan schools.
In cooperation with the Superintendent and other Assistant Superintendent(s), develop, organize, direct, and implement in-service programs and opportunities, including diocesan-wide Educator Day and Spring In-service.
Collaborate with diocesan offices and departments on issues that affect Catholic schools.
Communicate with parents and other community members who contact the Catholic Schools Office and serve as a liaison with the schools on any issues reported.
Work with committees at the request of the Superintendent.
Perform other job-related tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the Catholic Schools Office as assigned by the Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Ability to use management practices that promote collegiality, teamwork, and collaborative decision-making.
Knowledge and experience in school or institutional development and marketing.
Ability to assess personnel needs and implement policies and processes accordingly.
Strong skill in conflict resolution, mediation, and problem-solving with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community members.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, as well as diocesan policies regarding interviewing, hiring, evaluating, and terminating personnel.
Working knowledge of Arizona State licensing requirements for preschools, elementary schools, and high schools.
Ability to make decisions using initiative, creativity, and appropriate sensitivity to the needs of people.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to personally utilize technology to increase productivity, efficiency, and promotion of Catholic schools.
Ability to provide excellent customer service and collaborate effectively with staff, clergy, religious, and laity.
Ability to organize, prioritize, and use effective time management techniques.
Ability to travel to schools and meetings, including some evenings and weekends.
Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Ability to conduct multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Awareness of current trends in Catholic education.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must possess:
Master’s Degree in Education, Administration/Supervision, or a related field.
Five years of principal experience.
Ability to be certified as a principal and/or superintendent in the State of Arizona.
Active, practicing membership in the Roman Catholic Church, in full communion with the Church.
