Graceland University is seeking a dynamic and inspiring full-time Head Softball Coach to lead and develop a nationally competitive women’s softball program. Graceland Softball is a storied program, rooted deep in the history of the University. Graceland University is a private liberal arts university located in Lamoni, Iowa and a proud member institution in one of the most competitive NAIA conferences in the country, the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The university is conveniently located 1 hour south of Des Moines, Iowa and just under 2 hours north of Kansas City, Missouri.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities •Oversees the planning, coordination, and implementation of all aspects of the Softball program including team organization, player selection and evaluations, practice planning and execution, game preparation, and scouting and strategy. •Coach, teach, train, and demonstrate sport related skills and techniques to student-athletes through all aspects of collegiate softball, both individually and in groups. May coach/manage a designated skill development area or group of position(s). •Evaluate individual player skill performance and provide instruction in areas requiring further development. Review video to evaluate skills and determine needed areas of development. •Recruitment of student-athletes through the entire enrollment process that fits the culture of the softball program, athletic department, and University. •Participates in the evaluation of prospective talent through high school visits, onsite game observations at high school, regional, state, and national competitions, and film/video review and analysis. •Active role in the mentoring and wellbeing of all student-athletes within the softball program including team discipline, player counseling, and related matters requiring discretion, decision making and independent judgment. •Implement retention and persistence initiatives with a strong focus on academic success to enable and help student-athletes succeed academically. •Responsible for all business functions related to the program such as budget management and fundraising initiatives. •Oversight of all assistant coaches and their respective roles and responsibilities within the program and athletic department. •Work collaboratively with athletic department staff and multiple campus units to ensure a positive and successful student-athlete experience. •Represents the University at campus, alumni, and community functions. •Pending academic credentials, may teach one class per semester in the Transformational Leadership Major. •Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and three years’ coaching experience, or involvement in the sport of softball at the high school, college, or national level required.
Master’s Degree and recruiting experience preferred.
Effective communicative and public relation skills.
Strong organizational and administrative skills.
Competent knowledge of sport specific techniques, skill development and game planning.
An understanding of how to cultivate and manage a successful team culture.
The ability to understand and articulate program needs.
Demonstrated competency in helping to meet program objectives, working independently, supervising others, and helping to establish program priorities.
An ability to communicate with and interact positively with students, faculty, staff, and the broader University community.
Knowledge in the operational use of computer and video technology.
The ability to develop a safe and functional working environment.
An appreciation of and a willingness to adhere to the Heart of America Conference and NAIA philosophy, rules, and regulations.
Ability to work collaboratively, follow directions and adapt to decision-making as part of a forward-thinking athletic department.
