Career Advisor

About the Opportunity

This role provides personalized and iterative career services and is expected to embrace a self-directed and life-long learning mindset. The Career Advisor will provide comprehensive career services to Northeastern learners, including advising for undergraduates, graduate students and alumni across the global Northeastern network in the areas of career development, selection of major and/or career, graduate school preparation and job acquisition. They create and deliver seminars, networking events, and programs to meet evolving needs of learners regarding career development topics. They will assist the NUPLACE Associate Director in supervising the Diversity Fellows program including recruiting, training and managing 10+diversity peer advisors annually. The Career Advisor will provide support and coordination for NU PLACE programs, resources, and services. NU PLACE is a new initiative integrating programs, resources, and services in the Northeastern University ecosystem that address the intersection of career and identity to support the professional development and career trajectory of marginalized learner populations (including students of color, first generation and low income, LGBTQA+, International, students with disabilities and other underrepresented intersections of identity) across all Northeastern campuses.

The Career Advisor will deliver and interpret a variety of career assessments. They develop and deliver workshops and panels. They serve as liaison to a college by building relationships with co-op and academic faculty, academic advisors, and alumni within that college to co-create relevant, targeted career programming. The Career Advisor will liaise with student services areas to co-create programs and communicate trends and career information. They assist the department with large and small-scale events such as career fairs, networking nights, orientation sessions, career studio coverage and other career initiatives.

Qualifications:

• Master's degree in career development, higher education or demonstrably relevant field is required and relevant industry experience is preferred. 1-2 years of career advising experience preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of current labor trends and local, regional, and national job searching strategies.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated skill in presenting / teaching. Experience working with and affirming diverse cultures and backgrounds. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
• Excellent organizational, event and program management skills. Strong technology skills including webinar delivery.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Individual Client Case Management

• Demonstrates and integrates into career advising and instruction a lifelong learning mindset in career design
• Coaches learners including undergraduate, graduate and Doctoral students as well as alumni to design their career goals including identifying career interests, skills, personality and values, choosing a major and researching career paths.
• Facilitates learners' career decision-making utilizing various assessment tools and differentiating approaches to meet diverse students' needs including those with unique abilities and international, non-traditional, first generation, and LGBQT+ communities
• Assists students and alumni with their job search process individually and in group coaching sessions, (cover letters, networking, resumes, interviewing and salary negotiations) and identifying employment opportunities or entrance into graduate school (identifying appropriate schools, editing application essays).
• Monitors current knowledge/market trends of career resources and research and recommends new resources.

DEIA Program Assistance

• Assists Associate Director of Career Equity with managing the Diversity Fellows program for NUPLACE including recruiting, training, and supervising 10 peer coaches.
• Assists Associate Director of Career Equity with providing professional immersion experiences, panel discussions, networking opportunities, and information sessions to BIPOC students as part of the NUPLACE initiative
• Serves as an active member of the University-wide NU PLACE coalition. The coalition meets regularly to build the infrastructure of institution-wide programming to address the gaps and expand existing resources of identity-based needs in the career and professional space.
• Assists in expanding resources of identity-based needs in the career and professional space.

Department/Divisional Service, and Professional Development

• Serves on department, division, and university committees. Represents the University at professional meetings and conferences.
• Assists with department activities and events such as networking events, and orientations.
• Participates in employer events and site visits.
• Participates in professional development and training activities including client issues roundtables, guest speaker lectures, employers and employment updates, and computer technology training.
• Maintains robust website materials, including videos and sample resumes, and contributes to social media content. Evaluates new website resources.

Program Design and Management

• Collaborates and builds partnerships as a liaison to a college to design targeted, experiential and competency-based programming and share trends and labor market information through university classes and seminars.
• Develops and delivers programming with an employer focus to connect students with potential opportunities, build their network and learn about jobs and career paths
• Assesses department programs for learning outcomes and relevance and use data to inform decision-making
• Collaborates with student services departments and student organizations on joint programming, and university sponsored programs.
• Increases visibility and attendance for programs through promotion and public relations campaigns. This includes communicating with students via email, student portal, cooperative education coordinators, academic faculty and student services departments
