The Green Vale School is a co-educational, independent day school (PN-8) located on a beautiful 40-acre campus on the North Shore of Long Island. The Green Vale School is seeking a Director of Strategic Communications to join our Senior Administrative team in July 2026.
General Summary
In partnership with members of the Senior Administrative team, the Director of Strategic Communications is responsible for advancing the school's brand, mission, program, and goals through data-driven internal and external communications. The individual in this position is responsible for the School’s strategic communications plan and oversees content creation and deployment across all of Green Vale’s channels (web, social media, photography, videography, public relations, email, school app, newsletters, and print publications).
Reporting to the Head of the School, the Director of Strategic Communications will be a visible, collaborative community presence, forging relationships with faculty/staff, students, parents, and alumni. They will partner effectively with other members of the Senior Administrative team.
Qualified candidates will possess at least ten years of experience in a related field and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. Green Vale seeks candidates who are skilled, creative, innovative, and adept at employing technology. The ideal candidate leverages AI and modern digital tools as essential aids for efficiency and creativity. Effective writing and speaking skills, a good sense of humor, a positive outlook, and an appreciation of the unique qualities of the age group are essential.
Essential Responsibilities:
Brand Management
Brand Oversight: Oversee the GVS branding and visual identity across all school manifestations to ensure consistency and quality.
Value Proposition: Champion the school’s mission and value proposition, ensuring it is clearly articulated in all external messaging.
Visual Standards: Ensure the school maintains a library of high-quality photos, videos, and news content that accurately reflects the community's vibrancy.
Content Creation, Production, and Placement
Content Strategy: Oversee content creation and deployment across all Green Vale channels (web, email, app, and print).
Social Media: Curate and produce engaging content for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok
Publications: Produce the annual Green Vale Magazine (source content & visuals, write all articles, fact-check, and manage production).
Head of School Communications: Draft and manage speeches, letters, and blogs for the Head of School.
Media Placement: Manage relationships with media outlets to strategize, schedule, and secure advertising placement across digital and print channels to maximize the school's reach.
Operations & Key Partnerships
Admissions: Partner with the Admissions team to design cohesive marketing campaigns and digital collateral that articulate the value proposition to prospective families.
Development: Collaborate with the Advancement Office to craft compelling narratives for fundraising appeals (annual fund, capital campaign, etc.), stewardship reports, and alumni communications.
Academics: Work with Division Heads and faculty to translate pedagogical goals and classroom innovations into accessible stories for parents, assisting educators in refining their communications.
Operations
Internal Communications: Oversee all school-wide communications received by parents to ensure clarity, accuracy, and appropriate tone.
Crisis Communications: Lead the strategy for reputation management and draft rapid-response communications to ensure a unified voice during challenging situations.
Technology & Efficiency: Manage the school’s communication platforms (website, email, app) and use AI tools to help create, edit, and update content efficiently.
Education and Experience:
Minimum 10 years of experience in a related field, preferably within an independent school setting.
Proven excellence in collaborating with a team and managing other employees.
Demonstrated excellence of existing and emerging social media platforms, including an understanding of video strategies.
Experience writing and editing press releases and content for varied audiences.
Bachelor's Degree required, ideally in marketing, communications, education or business
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills with the ability to produce written materials in a variety of formats quickly, accurately, and effectively.
Tech & AI Proficiency: Comfort leveraging Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) to accelerate content creation and ideation, alongside standard software like Google Suite.
Ability to develop communication campaigns and oversee content production from concept to completion.
Executive presence and ability for high visibility at events to represent the school.
Exceptional attention to detail, precision, and accuracy in tasks; strong organization and time management skills.
Strong knowledge of graphic design (Canva/Adobe) and digital photography.
