The School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in the City of New York invites applications from scholars and practitioners whose work focuses on international security policy, for a position as the Arnold A. Saltzman Professor in War and Peace studies at the rank of full Professor or at the rank of Professor of Professional Practice, to begin July 1, 2026. Disciplinary specialization is open, and includes political science, public policy, history, law, economics, and sociology. Candidates should have a PhD or a combination of another terminal degree and senior policy experience. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and intellectual leadership in the SIPA International Security and Diplomacy curriculum at the masters level, and engage with other SIPA and Columbia faculty to address global policy challenges including great power competition, intelligence practice, nuclear weapons, civil-military relations, technology, or regional security, among others.
The successful candidate will direct the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies. The Institute was founded in 1951 as The Institute of War and Peace Studies (IWPS), under the sponsorship of Dwight D. Eisenhower, during his tenure as president of Columbia University, in an effort to promote an understanding of "the disastrous consequences of war upon man’s spiritual, intellectual, and material progress." In March, 2003, the Institute was renamed the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies (SIWPS), in honor of the late Arnold A. Saltzman. In its more than 70-year history, the Institute has served as one of the foremost research centers on international relations in the country.
Ph.D. in political science, public policy, history, economics, sociology, or related disciplines, or a terminal degree (e.g. Juris Doctor) plus senior experience in policy practice. Candidates will be expected to sustain a strong commitment to research, publication, and teaching, and to practice entrepreneurial leadership as Saltzman Institute Director, to include effective fundraising and cultivation of the Institute?s public profile in the field.
Applicants should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, statement of current and future plans, a writing sample, and a list of references.
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For further information, please contact Eric Fillinger, Program Director for Faculty Affairs, at ef2622@columbia.edu.
