Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Coach Women’s Soccer. This is a full-time, 12-month position with benefits.
This is a professional coaching position, and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules and regulations of affiliated national, regional and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the Mid-American conference (or subsequent member conference) and the university.
Under the general supervision of the Head Coach Women’s Soccer, this position will assist head coach in coaching student-athletes, implementation and instruction of game strategy, recruiting prospective student-athletes, monitoring student-athlete academic progress, program organization, managing travel, managing student-athlete scholarships and overseeing the discipline, conduct and image of the sport program and student-athletes of a major university sport program in conjunction with other departmental responsibilities as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Coaching – 35%
Assist the head women’s soccer coach with instructing players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
Responsible for the ongoing teaching and instruction of student-athletes in the performance of their sport such as, but not limited to, games, practices, individual and team workouts, and conditioning sessions.
Academic Support – 15%
Provide an overall positive educational environment for our Student-Athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college.
Supervise, in conjunction with the athletic tutoring and advising program, the total academic progress of the team implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff.
Team-Related Activities – 15%
Assist the head coach in the preparation for and conducting of all team-related activities including skill instruction, sport strategy and competitive opportunities.
Coach and instruct student-athletes individually and in groups and demonstrate game techniques and skills required to be successful at women’s soccer.
Plan and attend coaching and practice sessions, games, tournaments, etc. in accordance with NCAA and conference regulations for specified positions.
Develop, recommend, and teach game strategy.
Administration – 10%
Assist in the administration of the entire sport program, including, but not limited to daily practices, game planning and implementation, recruiting, equipment management, facilities scheduling, and budget.
Safety & Conduct – 10%
Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and university.
Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the student-athletes within the sport program.
Departmental Needs – 5%
Assist with departmental needs as requested.
When practical under the circumstances, intercollegiate athletic staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend all athletic events to promote audience participation and support for NIU team efforts.
Public Relations – 5%
Perform both direct and indirect public relations functions including promotion, fundraising, public speaking, community events, and through camps and/or clinics.
Serve on departmental/campus committees as requested.
Minimum three (3) years of experience demonstrating women’s soccer in-field and goalkeeping skills, game and training strategies, plus teaching progressions.
Minimum three (3) seasons of coaching experience at the collegiate level.
Minimum one (1) year of experience recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes, particularly at the regional level (Midwest) including knowledge of AAU and high school programs.
Additional Requirements:
Ability to empower, communicate with and relate well to the female student-athlete.
Ability to effectively communicate through oral, written and electronic forms.
As a staff member within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, you are responsible for knowledge of and compliance with National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) regulations, both those general in nature and those which apply directly to your position’s responsibilities.
Strict adherence to all applicable governing policies, procedures, and regulations of the NCAA is required and is a condition of your employment.
Physical Demands/Requirements: Sitting, standing, walking, running, occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree.
Competitive experience in women’s soccer on the university or college level.
