Description:
We are looking to hire a junior specialist to join our Gliomics Research Group (https://www.gliomics-lab.com/) at the Center for Neuroscience at UC Davis. Our group is interested in understanding the genetic regulation of microglia states in neurodegenerative diseases. We aim to identify, track, and manipulate microglia states using various in vitro and in vivo stem cell models, genomics, epigenetics, and imaging techniques. We are passionate about advancing our understanding of diseases and making a difference in patients' lives. This position will contribute specifically to projects that use stem cell-derived models to understand better the role of microglia states in health and diseases. We particularly seek applicants with cell culture experience interested in participating in each step of the project, from design to analysis. This is an exciting opportunity to support and develop new projects on neuroimmune interactions in Alzheimer's disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. This position will provide an outstanding foundation for a career in science, medicine, or biotechnology, with multiple possible career paths in academia and industry.

RESEARCH 90%
Experimental design - 15%
  • Work with team members and collaborators to design and carry out experiments essential to thegroup's collective success.
  • Consult the literature, supervisor, and other scientific staff as needed to troubleshoot experiments.

    Data collection and analysis - 60%
  • Prepare and maintain cell cultures, including induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), derived neurons,and glia.
  • Prepare and maintain stocks of necessary reagents, solutions, and supplies.
  • Maintain detailed experimental records, documentation, and written protocols.
  • Perform basic immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and image analysis.

    Lab management and lab tasks - 15%
  • Assist with equipment maintenance and laboratory organization
  • Ensure new lab members are trained on appropriate lab procedures.
  • Maintaining and purchasing lab supplies
  • Maintenance of IRB protocols

    PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE. 5%
  • The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • The incumbent may have the opportunity to submit data for presentation to relevant conferences, such as Society for Neuroscience (if funding is available).
  • Active participation in weekly lab meetings, journal club presentations, presentations from outside speakers, and weekly workshops to help incumbents develop their career goals.
  • Participation in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and/or review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise

    UNIVERSITY SERVICE 5%
  • The incumbent will mentor undergraduate student assistants in the lab.
  • The incumbent will participate in public outreach activities.
