A. Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The primary purpose of the unit is to provide leadership in developing communities or subsets of communities within Richmond Collaborative (Richmond, Scotland, Hoke, Montgomery Counties) to initiate and maintain interventions to improve health status.
The tasks necessary to develop a community to address its health needs include environmental and policy assessments, resource identification and development, advocacy, appropriate development/selection of interventions, and evaluation. Additional tasks include effective promotion, marketing, and public relations to maximize service delivery goals and objectives.
Services range from the development of community members/resources within communities, to facilitating environmental system changes, to advocating for policy development, to implementing policy change across a 4-county region and partnership.
Primary Purpose of Position:
This position will be responsible for the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the Improving Community Outcomes for Maternal & Child Health (ICO4MCH) Initiative grant project in the 4-county regional partnership of Richmond, Scotland, Hoke, and Montgomery counties. The aims of this initiative are to improve birth outcomes, reduce infant mortality and improve health status of children ages 0-5. This position is responsible for coordinating doula services and responsibilities of the ICO4MCH Initiative project in the regional partnership. Work will include facilitating community change, partnership development, coalition building, community organizing and partner communications.
ICO4MCH Initiative Aims:
Improve birth outcomes, reduce infant mortality, and improve the health status of children ages 0-5.
This position will further the initiative by providing doula services as a certified doula to community members to improve birth outcomes.
This position will collaborate closely with the ICO4MCH staff, local health department staff, partnering hospital staff, community partners, and other organizations as needed to achieve public health outcomes.
Work Schedule:
Hours can be unexpected and subject to change based on the needs of the community and/or agency. Other hours required to work may include early morning, evening, and/or weekend times as community events arise. Doulas will not work hourly by reimbursed per client.
DESCRIPTION OFRESPONSIBILITIESANDDUTIES:

Ensure all program deliverables and objectives are met and reports are delivered in a timely manner
Attend relevant coalition meetings in each county for the purpose of improving MCH
Ensure scope of work, deliverables, reporting requirements are met as outlined in the Agreement Addendum
Conduct community outreach and education.
Educate local hospitals, LHD staff and maternity patients on the program.
Provide complete doula services for each enrolled participant, which includes the following:
minimum of 1 prenatal visit
the provision of childbirth education
continuous onsite labor support at the hospital
at least 1 postpartum visit either in the hospital or within 1 week after birth
at least 1 telephone contact within 30 days after birth.
Collect data on program participants and report on a biannual basis. Program participant data shall include demographic information, prenatal care visits, breastfeeding initiation and duration, delivery outcomes, and birth outcomes.
Administer a birth satisfaction survey to each Doula Services program participant. All birth satisfaction survey responses shall be entered into an online survey provided by the DPH Contract Administrator.
Administer a program participant satisfaction survey to evaluate program services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES AND TAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A Doula is a professional who provides non-medical support and guidance to individuals and families during pregnancy and childbirth. Doulas can help with many aspects of the experience, including:

Emotional support – Doulas offer continuous emotional support to the birthing person, which can help easy anxieties and provide comfort. They can also advocate for their clients’ wishes during labor and delivery.
Physical support – Doulas can help prepare for labor and childbirth, and provide comfort measures during labor and delivery.
Informational support – Doulas can educate expecting parents on birthing options and techniques, and assist with creating and following a postpartum plan. They can make referrals to community resources and other professionals
Doulas must have excellent communication skills so they can build trusting relationships with their clients, and communicate effectively with medical staff and other support people.
B. 1. Required Minimum Training:
Must be willing to become a trained doula, working towards certification. Must have insurance coverage for providing doula services to birthing people. Preferred Doula trained and certified with insurance coverage. Preferred knowledge of public health and services offered at local health department as well as community knowledge of services offered relevant to birthing people.
2. AdditionalTraining/Experience: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Publisher, and have basic email skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for this position. This position will require the ability to work in a community partnership and recognize that this work and position will be highly visible at the local, state, and national level.
