This full time, career position will support The UC Davis Environmental Health Sciences Center THREE: Towards Health, Resilience and Environmental Equity, an NIEHS-funded interdisciplinary program directed by Dr. Irva Hertz-Picciotto in the Department of Public Health Sciences and the UC Davis Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH), a State of California-funded program directed by Dr. Peter James, also in the Department of Public Health Sciences. The EHS Center THREE is one of more than 20 NIEHS Core Centers across the country and includes multiple program components with the overarching goals of growing the field of environmental health sciences research, understanding exposures and the mechanisms by which they cause disease or disability, and translation of the science to address the many environmental health issues facing Californians, with a focus on residents in northern California and in the Central and San Joaquin Valleys. The COEH at UC Davis is part of the state-legislated Northern California COEH, which brings together faculty and staff on the Davis, Berkeley, and San Francisco campuses of the University of California to educate future leaders in occupational and environmental health; develop new knowledge related to occupational and environmental health issues; and bring the resources of the University of California to people affected by health hazards in their workplaces or communities. The UC Davis COEH builds upon these core areas through research built upon strengths of UC Davis and translational activities that broaden the influence of the CenterThe Digital Communications Specialist will have responsibility to strategically grow the online digital footprints of both Centers, including social media and website design, while making sure that the messaging incorporates a wide variety of content for diverse audiences, and appropriately reflects the mission, goals and initiatives of each of the two Centers. Both Centers target audiences include community stakeholders (state agencies, community-based organizations and advocates, employee organizations), researchers, and policymakers. In collaboration with Center researchers, the candidate will translate complex scientific concepts and findings to create cogent and engaging articles covering a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: plastics, plasticizers and micro- and nano-particles and their health effects; neurocognitive or behavioral outcomes in animal models; climate change and both physical and mental health; disproportionate exposures and health disparities in underserved populations/environmental justice; molecular mechanisms linking environmental exposures to chronic diseases; weather change and geographic migration of infectious diseases; improved methods and tools for measuring exposures and health outcomes; and other advances in occupational and environmental health. This position will move the content out through social media, continually monitor performance of the websites, research ways to improve design elements, initiate new communication projects using multiple media platforms, and use web analytics to strategize technical approaches that maximize the reach and impact of both Centers. Under the direction of the EHSC Center THREE Director and Program Administrator and the COEH Director, the candidate will serve as liaison between each of the Centers and institutional, California, and federal sponsor public affairs/communications offices in the development of press releases and other media communications. The Digital Communications Specialist will also select, supervise, and mentor EHSC student interns from the University Writing Program / other internship programs.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, journalism or a related field and/or equivalent experience or training.
Minimum of two years of experience in professional or journalistic writing in one of the following fields: environmental science, environmental health, environmental justice, environmental policy, biological sciences, or public health or equivalent.
Experience with social media and website analytics and SEO strategies.
Experience building strategic communication plans, organizing projects, and executing plans with key performance indicators.
Experience with web accessibility standards.
Experience operating digital audio and video recording equipment and experience with digital audio and video editing software.
Demonstrated experience creating a high volume of web and social media content.
Demonstrated experience writing for a policy or advocacy audience.
Experience writing for an academic audience or contributing to academic publications.
Experience supervising and mentoring junior writers.
Demonstrated knowledge of content management systems (e.g. Drupal), online journals, bibliographic databases, citation management software (e.g. EndNote).
Demonstrated skills in planning and designing templates and reformatting for websites, consideration of design elements, workflows and strategies.
Excellent proofreading skills.
Outstanding organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate several projects simultaneously while maintaining strict attention to detail.
Skill and experience using graphic design software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop or other desktop publishing applications to create brochures, flyers, posters or other materials.
