Research Communications Coordinator -- Gies College of Business Office of Marketing & Communications
The Office of Marketing and Communications at the University of Illinois' Gies College of Business acts as an in-house marketing agency, partnering with and supporting units across the College. Our growing team of nearly 30 professionals plays a pivotal role in helping the College shape purposeful leaders through life-changing access to education, research, and innovation. Creativity, strategy, and collaboration are key to our team's success as we grow the reputation and brand of Gies Business, a Top 10 public business school with more than 9,000 residential and online students and 80,000 alumni around the world. All members of the Gies MarCom team contribute to the management and growth of the Gies brand.
Job Summary As research communications coordinator, you will be the main point of contact for the College's faculty-led research centers and initiatives. Successful promotion and execution of these units is critical in recruiting and retaining world-class faculty in key subject areas, and these centers serve as proof points of how the College lives out its brand promise: Business on Purpose. Your primary responsibility will be to establish and execute a brand communications strategy for each unit. In this role you will gather, write, manage, and distribute-across a wide range of platforms-stories that showcase the research excellence and innovation at Gies. As a member of the Office of Marketing and Communications you will collaborate with our cross-functional team including designers, strategists, videographers, and project managers to deliver successful outcomes. Duties & Responsibilities
Communications
Work closely with the Director of Communications to develop strategic communication plans to enhance the reputation of the College's faculty-led research centers and initiatives, which are a critical component of the Gies Business brand commitment. This also includes working with stakeholders to execute the plans.
Identify, research, and write news stories, features, and thought leadership for distribution via webpages, articles, press releases, social media, and other channels as appropriate.
Gather and write short-form newsletter content highlighting research and innovation stories.
Develop brief announcements and notices for internal audiences.
Write and update website content that is clear, concise, and audience-focused.
Collaborate with the Director of Brand Engagement to ensure appropriate application of the Gies College of Business and University of Illinois brand standards.
Maintain a consistent brand voice and tone.
Provide editing, proofreading, and quality assurance as needed.
Provide communications support for signature events, announcements, and other strategic communications for research centers and initiatives.
Management
Serve as a liaison between the Office of Marketing and Communications and the College's faculty-led centers and initiatives, acting as their primary point of contact to promote research outcomes.
Build relationships with faculty and staff to effectively collaborate on research communications that align with the College brand.
Develop production schedules and deadlines, coordinating communications projects from concept to execution and ensuring they complement/align with overall College brand communication/marketing plans.
Ensure deadlines are met and work closely with stakeholders to ensure projects are moving at an appropriate pace.
Recruit, hire, and manage student employees as needed.
Monitor industry and media trends and apply as appropriate to this work.
Work within and contribute to team project management systems.
Other communications and marketing duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
Three (3) years (36 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area. (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.)
Experience writing for a variety of audiences through different channels.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in higher education.
Experience writing about research.
Experience developing and implementing communications plans.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask, and work in a team environment as well as work independently.
A passion for education and a genuine interest in promoting the College's mission.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with designers, writers, videographers, and other marketing positions.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage projects.
Superb interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to foster positive relationships and facilitate collaboration
Strong writing and editing skills
Skilled in managing strategy discussions and developing marketing and/or communications plans
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 - Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for the position is $60,000 to $70,000. This position requires in-person work and is eligible for a hybrid schedule, with the ratio of weekly in-office and work-from-home days to be determined by the supervisor. A path for professional growth is embedded in this and every position in the Gies Office of Marketing and Communications. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
