Department Overview Student and Equity Affairs coordinates equity, diversity and inclusion efforts for UC students, faculty and staff; oversees student governance and policies; connects students and leadership; and stewards practices and policies that support students' mental health and well-being.
Position Summary The Government Relations Associate supports UCSA's legislative advocacy efforts through research, communications, trainings, and coordination with students and coalition partners. This is a hybrid position that can be based in either Sacramento or Oakland.
Key Responsibilities
30% Research & Analysis: Conducts research and develops reports and factsheets on legislative, judicial, and regulatory decisions on issues affecting affordability, access, equity, and quality of education and student resources at the UC, including attention to issues affecting students of color and other historically underrepresented populations.
25% Event Coordination: Plan and execute affinity themed lobby days for student groups. Assist Government Relations Director with UC Hill Day and Student Lobby Conference.
20% Training: Provide lobbying skills trainings to student lobby corps, Assists campus legislative directors and Board members in the recruitment and development of campus lobby corps and involving members of their student association in UCSA's legislative campaigns. Prepares and facilitates lobbying skills and issue trainings for Board members and lobby corps. Conducts campus visits to provide legislative training and skill development to UC students.
15% Student Engagement & Education: Develop and maintains advocacy communications infrastructure, statewide e-advocacy efforts (legislative alerts, call-ins, letter writing, etc.). Develops a communications plan regarding UCSA's priorities by ensuring that information on the UCSA website is up to date, organizing press outreach, working with legislative offices and coalition partners to develop shared messaging, and coordinating timely responses by students to current events and media inquiries. Coordinates travel for students to attend hearings and meetings with legislative offices or coalition partners. Assists students with the preparation of testimony for advocacy to legislators.
10% Coalition and Community Support: Support coalition-building, especially student-led efforts
Experience Required Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of training in related area and/or equivalent experience
Skills and Abilities Required Qualifications
Knowledge of basic concepts and principles of building and maintaining effective relations with a variety of alumni and other key constituencies.
Basic knowledge of the institution, its mission, vision, goals, achievements, policies, and infrastructure.
Organizational skills including skill to meet prescribed deadlines; event planning skills.
Written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including tact and political acumen to effectively represent the institution.
Analytical and critical thinking skills.
Applicable computer skills.
For staff in Government / Community Relations: basic knowledge of public policy and the legislative process.
