Duties:
The Department of Communication at the State University of New York at New Paltz, the leading comprehensive public university in the Mid-Hudson Valley invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Writing and Design Across Media, beginning in fall 2024. We seek candidates who use design to enhance strategic communication and who will lead students preparing to make a difference in the world. We especially encourage applications from individuals who can bring diverse cultural and ethnic perspectives and experiences to the campus and who can advise and mentor all members of our diverse student body. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses such as:
MA Program:
Organizational Writing and Design Across Media (MA program)
Strategic Communication (MA program)
BA Program:
Design and Public Relations (BA program)
Social Media and Public Relations (BA program)
Seminar in Strategic Communication (BA program)
Business and Professional Communication (BA program)
The normal teaching load is 9 credits per semester. Although teaching is the primary responsibility at SUNY New Paltz, a significant record of scholarly work and ongoing service to the department and the University are expected. Qualifications:
Required:
PhD in Communication, Communication Design, Media Studies, Rhetoric, or a related field. Candidates with another terminal degree who can demonstrate interdisciplinary training across communication and design are encouraged to apply
Evidence of strong writing, rhetorical, technological, and design skills
Demonstrated skill and experience using design programs and software, e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud
Record of scholarly and/or creative publication focused on writing, rhetoric, and/or design across media
Post-secondary teaching experience as the sole instructor
Preferred:
Record of professional design work
