The Field Supervisor will manage the day-to-day functions, staffing and maintenance schedule and operation of BC outdoor athletic facilities. This position will collaborate with the Athletic Maintenance Manager on staff assignments, budgeting, project planning and forecasting, event coverage, snow removal / storm coverage, set-up and breakdown of events, purchasing and inventorying of product and equipment. The Supervisor will consult on capital construction projects and capital renewal projects.
The main focus and function of this role is to provide quality control of daily staff tasks and assignments, providing a clean and safe playing surface for the student athletes and visitors. Communicate and execute the needs and expectations of the Athletic Department, the Facilities Services mission and greater needs of campus life.
The position will have working knowledge and will participate and manage the execution of: landscaping, turfgrass management, irrigation systems and controls, maintenance of turf and related equipment, construction, maintenance and upkeep of the facilities including but not limited to Harrington Athletics Village (Baseball / Softball stadiums), Newton Campus Athletics Facilities (synthetic Soccer / Field Hockey), Shea Field football practice fields, Fish Field House, Alumni Stadium, and the seasonal Air Supported Structure (Alumni Stadium bubble) during the winter months, maintaining, transporting and construction of athletic equipment, storage upkeep and organization, material / application logging and tracking. Event preparation and clean-up are integral to this role.
This position will also be trained in the day-to-day operations of Conte Forum/Hoag Basketball Pavillion. Conte/Hoag is host to Boston College Men's and Women's basketball and ice hockey teams. Conte Forum is also the host of approximately 30 university events including commencement, award banquets, Catholic mass, concerts, and numerous university events. This position may be asked to manage an event in Conte/Hoag if necessary. This would include, set up of the event, safely triage any issues that may arise, and clean up/break down of the event.
A successful candidate will have all of the required competencies and the strongest candidates will have all or many of the preferred competencies.
REQUIRED:
Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a union environment
Proven ability to manage and participate in multiple projects and multiple crews in a productive and safe manner
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively.
Self-starter with the ability to analyze situations and develop solutions to problems with minimal supervision.
Ability and experience maintaining high quality low cut natural grass athletic fields
Ability and experience in NCAA athletic field marking and painting
Proven experience maintaining clay infield diamond surfaces
Working knowledge of reel mowers, and associated turfgrass equipment
Working knowledge of irrigation systems and repair
Experience in maintenance and repair of synthetic infill turf surfaces
Experience in Kronos timekeeping (or similar)
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Docs
Excellent verbal, written and public relations skills
Strong mechanical skills and machinery troubleshooting
Flexibility to work varying hours
PREFERRED:
Knowledge and previous experience working with NCAA Division 1 Football, Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Tennis, Soccer, Rugby
Experience and knowledge of installation and maintenance air supported structures
Knowledge of Federal OSHA and Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards
Working knowledge of tools and equipment related to managing a multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility including lighting systems and irrigation systems.
Knowledge of Baseline irrigation system or comparable central control system
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of relevant experience maintaining high quality natural and synthetic athletic fields. Experience in NCAA athletic field marking and painting. Experience maintaining clay infield diamond surfaces.
Bachelor's degree in Turfgrass Management or related field
Massachusetts Hoisting license is preferred
Massachusetts Commercial Pesticide Applicators License preferred
Must maintain a valid driver's license
SCHEDULE/CONDITIONS/DEMANDS:
Work will include some holidays, nights and weekend shifts as dictated by the Athletics and event schedules. Every effort will be made to make coverage of project work, events and storm coverage as equitable as possible. Ability to sometimes work a very demanding schedule including nights, weekends, holidays, double shifts in all weather conditions.
Although this is primarily a supervisory role, on many occasions this position will be required to perform physically demanding tasks. This position will be required to be outside in the elements a good portion of assigned shifts.
