Job Description In Boston University's Office of the Provost, under the Associate Provost for Community & Inclusion, the Boston University Diversity & Inclusion team (BU D&I) seeks a Senior Communications Manager to establish and implement a wide array of communications processes and best practices for BU D&I and serve as a resource for the broader Community & Inclusion umbrella of units, including the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff, the Newbury Center, the BU Arts Initiative, and the Associate Provost for Community & Inclusion. The Senior Communications Manager is a member of BU D&I, whose mission is to provide institutional resources and programs in partnership with BU's 17 schools and colleges in service of the BU 2030 Strategic Plans priorities of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Community, Big Yet Small.
The Senior Communications Manager will help BU D&I notify the BU community about the programs, trainings, services, and support that BU D&I offers to the Boston University community. In addition, the Senior Communications Manager will support communications initiatives across all the Community & Inclusion units as assigned by the Associate Provost for Community & Inclusion. Examples of ongoing projects within the Senior Communications Managers scope of work include website maintenance, listserv cultivation, email announcement design, social media campaigns, and producing progress reports.
The Senior Communications Manager reports to the Director of Special Projects in BU D&I under the Associate Provost for Community & Inclusion and also has a dotted reporting line directly to the Associate Provost for Community & Inclusion. This position is located on the Boston University Charles River Campus with the potential for some remote flexibility.
Responsibilities:
Organize, maintain, and develop content for the BU D&I website. (15%)
Develop and implement public relations strategy for BU D&I, including identifying and building relationships with key stakeholders within and beyond BU (e.g., BU Today, Inside Higher Ed, The Daily Free Press, etc.), creating and implementing social media strategy, and identifying channels to publicize BU D&I events and resources (e.g., newsletter). (40%)
Develop resources, including welcome and information packets, annual reports, and more. (15%)
Convene regular communications meetings with the appropriate staff from Community & Inclusion units to strategize and serve as a resource. (15%)
Other communications projects as assigned by the Director of Special Projects and the Associate Provost for Community and Inclusion. (15%)
Required Skills A cover letter is required for consideration.
5-8 years of experience working in communications, public relations, or related fields.
Bachelor's degree or higher in any field.
Knowledgeable and passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in education and beyond.
Excellent written communication skills.
Experience working on communications within a university setting is highly desirable.
Experience developing social media content and maintaining social media presence on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic team.
Ability to manage multiple moving deadlines and ongoing projects simultaneously.
Working knowledge of academia, faculty roles and types, and higher education broadly.
Highly collaborative and demonstrated ability to build partnerships with stakeholders.
Knowledge of and experience navigating large, complex organizations.
