The Communications and Outreach Specialist for LunaSCOPE, a NASA SSERVI institute based at Brown University, is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive outreach strategies to engage diverse audiences in lunar science, exploration, and planetary research. This role plays a vital part in promoting the mission of LunaSCOPE, fostering collaborations, and disseminating scientific knowledge to inspire and educate the public. Â The Specialist will launch and manage all science activation, citizen science, public engagement, and IDEA (inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility) efforts of LunaSCOPE. The Communications and Outreach Specialist will work closely with the LunaSCOPE team, NASA, academic researchers, industry partners, and the community to enhance outreach efforts and facilitate engagement with LunaSCOPE and NASA SSERVI initiatives. This position will collaborate with the LunaSCOPE Leadership to drive outreach and foster inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) initiatives. Primary responsibilities include: coordinating training and development programs in collaboration with Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and LunaSCOPE partners; developing and implementing activities and events in collaboration with LunaSCOPE partners and organizations to engage diverse communities and promote lunar science and exploration; collaborating with external evaluators to assess the effectiveness of LunaSCOPE activities and events; supporting LunaSCOPE teaching programs aimed at providing educational opportunities to students; and working closely with the LunaSCOPE Program Manager to enhance the LunaSCOPE website and create effective materials to convey the mission, achievements, and initiatives of LunaSCOPE.
This is a fixed-term, 50% effort position renewal each year up to five-years, depending on funding source.
Education and Experience
Bachelorâ™s degree in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field with 3-5 years experience in a related field or the equivalent combination of experience and education.
Familiarity with lunar science, space exploration, or related scientific disciplines, preferred.
Previous work in building collaborations with diverse communities, preferred.
Previous work within an academic environment or in a role that supports communications and development; community outreach; events and programs, preferred. Â
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Proficiency in MS Office applications, Google Suite platforms and Zoom.
Knowledge and command of evolving social media platforms.
Ability to prioritize complex and at times competing goals.
Initiative and judgment to independently problem solve.
Ability to work with little supervision and also serve as strong team member.
Ability to exercise restraint and discretion in matters that are confidential or otherwise sensitive.
Ability to develop and execute creative programming that engages diverse audiences.

The incumbent may have to work at events in the evening, over the weekend and attend off-campus events.
