Job Description:
The Communications Manager/Sr Communications Manager and Writer for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Brownâ™s Office of University Communications (OUC) is a is a communications strategist, cross-platform content producer and storyteller who develops and guides editorial content for externally facing communications about the teaching, research and service missions of the University, with a special emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. Reporting to the Deputy Director for News and Editorial Development, the Manager and Writer is part of a collaborative News and Editorial Development team that works with other units within OUC to integrate strong editorial content with visual storytelling and strategies for tailoring communications to the best platforms to reach Brownâ™s audiences.
The Manager and Writer produces and manages editorial content focused on the Cogut Institute for the Humanities, the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the Brown Arts Institute and a wide range of academic units across the arts, humanities and social sciences. To elevate Brownâ™s strengths in these areas, the incumbent develops and maintains a relationship with academic and administrative units in the humanities and social sciences to help further their goals to promote their faculty, students, programs and events.
The Manager and Writer shares the story of Brownâ™s robust research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences via news releases, feature stories, profiles, websites, newsletters, digital and print publications, and other strategic vehicles intended to demonstrate Brownâ™s strengths to its many audiences. The editorial responsibilities are multifaceted, supporting the news, media relations, social media, and web and digital functions of OUC, along with strategic editorial support for campus clients. The incumbent serves as a media relations officer, interacting with journalists locally and across the world to secure earned media coverage about Brownâ™s strength in humanities and social sciences, and respond to expert requests and other inbound queries.
Major Responsibilities:
-With a special emphasis on the humanities and social sciences, develop news coverage of the teaching, research and service missions of the University, including guiding and supporting writers in other units across the University in contributing effective news coverage.
-Serve as a media relations officer and adviser to units across Brown for attracting national and local media coverage of significant scholarship, research and initiatives in the humanities and social sciences.
-Partner with University departments and campus offices in development of content on major communications vehicles supporting their outreach about programs, initiatives and activities serving Brown audiences, including providing strategic guidance and writing support to develop the most effective editorial content spanning key print and digital communications.
This is a split graded job posting. Candidates will be considered based upon the qualifications.
Grade 10 Qualifications- Communications Manager and Writer for the Humanities and Social Sciences
Education and Experience
A college degree is required.
Minimum five years of professional experience in journalism and/or media relations
Grade 11 Qualifications - Senior Communications Manager and Writer for the Humanities and Social Sciences
A college degree is required. Advanced degree preferred
Minimum seven years of professional experience in journalism and/or media relations
Job Competencies
Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing news coverage plans
Exceptional writing and editing skills, including proficiency in Associated Press writing style
Demonstrated ability to research information, conduct effective interviews and write well and quickly
Experience using computing tools for conducting research on the Internet, for communicating by e-mail, for writing documents that are properly formatted in appropriate templates, and maintaining appropriate story databases
Experience developing effective messaging tailored to audiences
Ability to sustain and build rapport with stakeholders
Proven experience managing multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment
Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment. Â
