Department Overview

The School of Dentistry shares the mission of the Oregon Health & Science University to provide educational programs, basic and clinical research, and high quality care and community programs. We strive to foster an environment of mutual respect where the free exchange of ideas can flourish. The dental school prepares graduates in general dentistry and the dental specialties to deliver compassionate and ethical oro-facial health care. Our department's location is nestled in Portland's beautiful South Waterfront making it a convenient location to commute to. Our Skourtes Tower facility in the Robertson Life Sciences Building houses both our School of Dentistry and our patient clinics, providing sweeping views of the city and an unmatched setting for education, research, and exemplary oral health care.

Function/Duties of Position

The Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing communications and related strategies that elevate the OHSU School of Dentistry as a leader in dental care, research, community outreach, and education; and supporting engagement of faculty, students, residents, alumni and other key audiences, including prospective students and patients.

This individual plans, executes and sustains effective multi-dimensional communications efforts that help to achieve School of Dentistry goals and is responsible for the school's day-to-day communications function. The position provides communications counsel and support to the Office of the Dean and senior leaders on a broad array of issues affecting employee, alumni, and student life.

With a dedicated focus on the dental school, this individual works in concert with other communications professionals across OHSU's employee communications, media relations, social media, brand strategy and marketing, government relations and events functions; the School of Dentistry Alumni Association (SDAA); the OHSU Foundation; among others.

Required Qualifications

Education Bachelor's degree Communications, Marketing or related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience Minimum 5 years' professional communications experience

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Communications, Marketing or related field

Experience in large, complex academic, government, healthcare and/or non-profit organizations.

Demonstrated knowledge of issues of importance to dentistry

Excellent writer/editorDemonstrated project management skills
