Baylor University is the publisher for the Department of Student Media, which is part of the school's Department of Journalism, Public Relations and New Media. Student Media has been producing the Roundup yearbook since 1896, the Baylor Lariat newspaper since 1900, and in the last 10 years has expanded and added digital platforms and broadcasts. The Director of Student Media oversees three additional professional staff and nearly 60 students in a federal work-study program, providing advice, guidance and feedback protecting a reputation for strong, ethical journalism.
The department is respected nationwide and annually wins more than 100 state, regional and national journalism awards including Associated College Press Pacemakers, Gold Crowns and Silver Crowns from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and other honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, Associated Press Managing Editors, and the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. The director may also be asked to teach classes in journalism, and specifically broadcasting to advance that relatively new sequence.
A Bachelor's degree, five years of relevant experience and an active Christian faith are required. A Master's degree and eight years of relevant experience is preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the degree requirement. Experience in Journalism or a Journalism-related field, with additional experience in broadcasting preferred. Computer, organizational and customer service skills are necessary, along with strategic and critical thinking. The ideal candidate would be familiar with digital media and analytics, Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign and PhotoShop, Camayak and WordPress software.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
What You Will Do
Assist with creating an environment of academic and professional excellence for faculty, students, and staff in the department.
Establish and build internal and external relationships with Baylor constituents.
Manage the departments operations, budget, equipment, and Personnel.
Develop and implement strategies to extend and protect the image, identity and impact of the department and Baylor University.
Be knowledgeable of journalism ethics and trends in print, digital and broadcast.
Be aware of Baylor University policies, as well as federal work study guidelines.
Provide long-term vision and strategy for the department.
Strategize and manage growth in the broadcast and yearbook platforms.
Engage the departments alumni and the Journalism department's Advisory Board.
Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission.
Comply with university policies.
