Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing high-quality services to students and other members of the university community. The department has an annual operating budget of over $350M, operates 24/7/365, and oversees a $3B asset portfolio comprising a 7 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus. In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

This role is currently designated as hybrid and may provide incumbents with flexibility for partial telecommuting.
JOB PURPOSE:
Strategize, develop, and lead strategic enterprise-wide sustainability programs by integrating several organizational program efforts. Lead multiple program efforts, including student and staff education, waste diversion, multiple utility conservation, carbon emissions footprint shrinkage, green cleaning advocacy, and other programs in development in keeping with the vision for the overall initiatives. Specialize in utility conservation and waste diversion areas, analytics, and outreach program management.
CORE DUTIES:
Direct and develop programs for sustainable operations, communications, and community relations.
Pursue continuous improvement to existing programs and developing new programs as required to advance organizational sustainability operations.
Provide vision and support for development of sustainability programs managed by other organizational divisions such as green purchasing, sustainable practices, and recycling.
Collaborate across campus to advance sustainability: develop relationships and complement activities with faculty, academic departments, and institutes engaged in the sustainability field.
Conduct long term infrastructure planning in the topics of energy, water, waste, transportation and procurement, incorporating knowledge from the field and feedback from others.
Define activities of assigned groups, assess staffing needs, commit resources, evaluate performance, and develop staff.
Create, develop, and manage budget for assigned area(s).
Advance participation in the community and sustainability industry by establishing relationships with key professionals and organizations.
Serve as subject matter expert on sustainable operational issues, and support media and public relations concerns; collaboratively coordinate the media relations efforts with leadership.
Direct and supervise staff and third-party vendors.
Create and make presentations to showcase results, savings, and progress.
May manage junior staff and/or student interns.
Analytical Program Management roles include: providing oversight to the data collection and reporting process for surveys, reports, and publications; managing the analysis of campus sustainability performance and cases for various third party evaluations and surveys; managing various data-driven assessment projects for campus buildings, maintaining communication and outreach related to these programs; and designing, communicating, compiling, and reporting key sustainability performance indicators, trends and metrics to various organizations and stakeholders.
Outreach Program Management roles include: providing oversight to the designing, planning, and delivering campus education and training components of sustainability programs and services, raising campus awareness of sustainability goals and practices; managing schools' and departments' coordination for increasing the adoption of sustainability programs and services; managing sustainability publications, collateral, website and other online presentation; sourcing and coordinating external sustainability publicity and promotional opportunities; and submitting proposals for national and regional conferences.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of experience in sustainability program management, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Polished verbal and written communications skills, including public speaking and formal presentations.
Project management skills including reliable scopes of work, timelines, and cost estimates for sustainability projects.
Knowledge and ability to use personal computers and common business software including Microsoft Office.
Adept at understanding and communicating sustainability principles to others and ability to integrate those principles into operations.
Capability to diplomatically bridge the gap between sustainability idealists and pragmatists to motivate and align diverse interests to advance sustainability; ability to build consensus among diverse interest groups.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities that are highly desired and sought after:
Familiarity with higher education organizational and operational structures with the ability to think objectively through initiatives' impact in an institutional setting.
Knowledge and clear understanding of green building practices, sustainability opportunities and the technical expertise for addressing such concerns.
Ability to manage a complex and often competing set of priorities in a high-pressure, results-oriented environment. Ability to use sound judgment in following policies and procedures, using creativity to solve problems.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work on weekends and evenings.
Work involves long hours of standing and sustained communications/dialogue.
May work in mechanical equipment rooms, kitchens, waste management areas, construction sites.
Travel, local and non-local.

The expected pay range for this position is $145,000 to $152,000 per annum.
