Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) has an opening for a Physician Specialist I (Medical) to work within the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility in Yardville, NJ.
The Physician Specialist I is responsible for providing medical services to inmates of the Department of Corrections, that is consistent with the community standards of care. This position serves as a liaison for clinical matters with medical providers outside of the system and be available to provide on-call services.
Among the key duties for this position are the following:
Reports to the assigned state prison to examine referred patients.
Provides emergency care, routine medical care, preventive medical care and education to patients.
Refers patients to appropriate Physician Consults.
Assures implementation and ongoing status of on-site chronic clinics.
Makes rounds daily in the infirmary as assigned and documents patient's status in the progress notes of the medical record.
Prescribes medications from the formulary for patient's healthcare needs.
Participates in development of in-service programs and maintains public relations with other healthcare disciplines.
Provides services in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control infection guidelines, Federal, State and local laws and the Quality Improvement Program standards.
Serves as Site Medical Director and supervises physicians and other healthcare professionals.
Minimum Education and Experience:
MD/DO graduate from an accredited medical school Experienced in a primary care specialty

PHYSICALDEMANDS: Ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments. Ability to type and use a computer to enter in the Electronic Medical Records. Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position. The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position. The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, and your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, Can quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to exact positions. Frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting (typing). Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions. WORKENVIRONMENT: Ability to function in a fast paced environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. Ability to work in a secure environment with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors. Ability to handle emergency and crisis situations. Incumbent must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Risk of body fluid exposure. Must be able to maneuver around architectural barriers and obstructions found in a prison environment. Could be exposed to fumes, toxics, outdoor weather conditions and vibrations and moving mechanical parts. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.
