Columbia Global, a groundbreaking new initiative that will promote and facilitate social impact and meaningful engagement of Columbia University???s faculty, students, and alumni with the world, seeks a dynamic and innovative Director of Communications to oversee communications strategy and brand identity.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director will build and lead a team of writers, designers, multimedia specialists, and creatives. The Director will design and guide collaborative, forward-thinking efforts to support Columbia Global???s mission to enhance understanding, address global challenges, advance knowledge and its exchange and engage in social change. Through strategic creation and delivery of high-quality messaging and content across the entire spectrum of communications platforms ??? including digital and print media, live and virtual events and earned media ??? the Director will elevate Columbia Global???s profile, amplify its goals, achievements, and thought leadership, and bring its compelling stories to life for key audiences.
Develop and execute an integrated, multi-channel communication strategy to support Columbia Global???s mission and objectives;
Oversee identity and brand refresh initiative(s) and ensure its effective and sustained implementation across the evolving and expanding Columbia Global portfolio (including Columbia World Projects, the Columbia Global Centers and the Institute for Ideas and Imagination);
Serve as strategic communications advisor to Columbia Global leaders and teams to advance the organization???s impact, brand equity, storytelling and reputation;
Work across all Columbia Global teams to identify innovative opportunities for strategic communication and outreach activities, highlighting the Columbia Global???s scholarly, social and educational impact, evidence, and thought leadership;
Monitor, track, and assess the impact of communication strategy, with the goal of building brand equity;
Ensure all Columbia Global staff and partners are trained, oriented and adhere to the brand and identity strategy;
Recruit, lead, and motivate a small creative team and a larger roster of creative consultants, including photographers, videographers, writers, editors, and designers;
Serve as strategic communications advisor to Columbia Global leaders and teams to advance the company???s narrative, reputation, and to further program objectives as well as elevate leadership profiles as thought leaders by producing creative packages that establish their expertise and credibility;
Oversee or conduct regular domestic and international travel to find stories, secure visual assets, and train staff in communications, often managing consultant photographers and videographers;
Maintain professional growth and development of self and team by identifying educational/training programs, professional organizations, activities, and resources to stay current on national trends and to ensure state of the art communications strategies;
Implement a costed workplan on schedule, on budget and with excellence;
Perform related responsibilities as needed.
A bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field, and 7-9 years of related professional experience.

Master???s degree in journalism or related field, with an established ability to influence and counsel internal and external stakeholders while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment;
10+ years of communications leadership experience, including setting and executing communications strategy;
Outstanding writer and verbal communicator with the ability to distill complex issues into clear, impactful messaging, as well as find and tell complex stories to a general audience and donors in a way that blends emotion (heart) and impact (head);
Extensive experience in social impact work, international development and/or higher education;
Leadership experience at a media outlet, public relations agency and/or corporate or nonprofit communications team;
Experience collaborating with multi-sector stakeholders such as university leadership and faculty, government, foundation, and nonprofits;
Experience conducting press outreach with focus on traditional media outlets such as newspapers, television and radio;
Experience with range of operating systems and communications applications used for digital and print products
Must be deadline- and detail-oriented, as well as a team player and a problem solver.
