Reporting to the Dean of the College of Engineering & Science, the Communications Specialist combines an aptitude for writing and development of appealing visual content with strong marketing communications skills to promote the College of Engineering & Science brand, activities, and events, as well as the accomplishments of its National Institutes of Health-supported ReBUILDetroit program to internal and external constituencies.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter who takes initiative in developing communication strategies and is passionate about developing engaging content for web, social media, and other platforms that effectively tells our story and further connects us with those we serve.
The Communications Specialist will be expected to actively solicit stories and content from students, faculty, departments and programs, while working collaboratively with the University’s Marketing & Communications, Admissions and Alumni Relations offices to ensure consistency in brand and messaging.
Advise the E&S Deans office and ReBUILDetroit personnel on marketing and communication strategies. Provide regular reports on communication initiatives and quantify their success and identify areas of improvement | 15%
Solicit and produce content to communicate activities/events for recruiting and to promote the College of Engineering & Science and ReBUILDetroit program to external and internal constituencies (social media, web, alumni e-newsletter, etc.) | 50%
Take photos/video and use appropriate software to edit for use in messaging and communications | 15%
Support E&S and ReBUILDetroit websites updates and corrections | 10%
Collaborate with University Marketing & Communications, Admissions, and Alumni Relations in the design, content, targeting & messaging of communications. | 5%

A two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school.
Up to six months
Bachelors Degree Be able to explain and give technical information in normal English using little jargon as possible. Prior Banner INB and SSB preferred.
Two to five years experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Web and social media experience in authoring and maintenance; strong technical writing capabilities including technical diagramming using flowcharts, data flow programs and other applicable documentation methods.
Willingness to learn; evidence of ability to work with IT teams; strong problem solving capability; good communication skills, strict attention to detail, responsiveness when unexpected down-time occurs and commitment to ensuring Consortium members optimize shared resources · High-quality writing
