About the Department
The College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, Virology Laboratory, is currently accepting applications for three (3) full time, Research Assistants.
This position will support the University's mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities.
Job Overview
The Research Assistant is responsible for processing and storage of specimens as defined by protocol requirements using Lab Processing Charts (LPCs) in accordance with policies and procedures established either by the Lab supervisor, Lab director, study sponsor, UC or government regulatory agencies.
The Research Assistant is responsible for executing laboratory specimen handling and shipments of biological specimens, in coordination with the IDC Principal Investigator and Laboratory Manager/Director.
Essential Functions
- Perform PBMC cryopreservation using various blood container types. Able to perform a cell count accurately with viability and send to IQA for verification.
- Package and Shipment of infectious, diagnostic and biological substance samples in compliance with IATA Dangerous Goods regulation.
- Specimen troubleshooting, problem solving and resolution, and specimen transportation.
- Computerized specimen data entry, heavy documentation, and filing, faxing, telephone interface and lab result report generations.
- Processing adipose and lymph tissues and sample media stabilization preparation for shipping.
- Prepare body fluids for processing and shipping according to the LPC.
- Follows the established guidelines for centrifugation and aliquoting of samples based on the LPC.
- Uses correct lab database to track specimen transport and minimize lost specimens.
- Competently logs, enters information into LDMS (Lab Data Management System) accessions, triages and process specimens in preparation for storage/testing and transit.
- Package and shipment of Diagnostic, Biological and infectious substances via Federal Express, World Courier or UPS shipping companies.
- Attend new protocol start-up meetings, conference calls and annual study sponsor conferences as needed.
- Heavy communication with other national labs, site nursing staff, physicians, protocol monitors and international communication with labs in other countries.
- LDMS database entry, troubleshooting and specimen storage and retrieval.
- Sample processing and shipment from multiple divisions/departments within UC.
- Performs waived and moderately complexity testing as defined by CLIA. Preforms, reports and quality control according to established protocols, including the evaluation of specimen acceptability. Handles problems and appropriately and exhibits good judgement.
- Uses critical thinking to assess new lab protocols.
Essential Functions Continued
- Use and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment required for research studies.
- Coordinate sample processing and analysis with other research and commercial laboratories.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work to ensure the integrity of the ARS lab.
- Increase knowledge and skills in laboratory techniques and software applications necessary to conduct the assigned laboratory work.
- Participate fully as a vital member of the IDC Research Team to ensure the continued success and growth of our unit.
- Attends one department meeting a month.
- Stays up to date on necessary competencies/training i.e.: CITI, IATA, and DAIDS training. This is vital, it keeps the ARS lab in compliance with the studies and University of Cincinnati.
- Completes continuing education and training programs as assigned on continual basis.
- Other duties as delegated/assigned by the IDC Lab Manager, Clinical Research Director or Principal Investigator.
Required Education
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Experience
Additional related work experience may be required depending on field or discipline.
Additional Qualifications Considered
- Minimum 1-year relevant laboratory experience is ideal.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Meticulous documentation skills.
- A willingness to learn, excellent vision and strong reading comprehension is necessary.
- Proficiency in various computer and software applications (Microsoft Office) is ideal.
- Ideal candidate must be physically able to lift at least 30 pounds; walk distances throughout the hospital community; stand and/or sit extended periods of time.
- Must be available to work rotating shifts (day, evening and some nights) and rotating weekends.
