Duties and Responsibilities: The goal of the Nieman Journalism Lab (http://www.niemanlab.org) is to identify and encourage changes that can expand the production of quality journalism in America. We do so by tracking innovation, examining new business models, identifying best practices, and trying to be a forward-looking voice in figuring out the future of journalism. The deputy editor of the Lab will work with existing staff to help achieve this goal. This position will involve both writing and editing, as well as collaboration with the Lab's editor on its direction and strategy.

As a writer, the primary work of the position is smart reporting and writing on the evolution of the news ecosystem. That includes traditional news organizations, new online startups, nonprofit outlets, academic research, and the technology companies that impact how news is reported, distributed, and consumed. The ability to break news is important; so is a mind agile enough to see unreported angles, connect trends across fields, and go beyond press releases to add to the journalism world's net knowledge of itself.

As an editor, this person will use those same skills to work with both Lab staff writers and freelancers, and other external contributors on story conception, assignment, tracking, editing, and production. In addition, this position will involve working with other Lab, Nieman Foundation, or Harvard staff on other projects and initiatives where appropriate, including engaging with the Nieman Fellows and working on our social media platforms.

This position may start hybrid (some on-campus/some remote work), with the transition to a full-on campus in Cambridge if required by the department. Work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.

Bachelor's degree. Minimum 5 years experience as a working journalist, including significant experience editing the work of others. Strong familiarity with the production and distribution of news online. Reporting skills, source management, and the ability to generate story ideas are musts.

Online journalism experience and familiarity with the Nieman Journalism Lab are strongly preferred. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; attention to detail; strong project management skills. Ability to work under deadlines, take initiative, set priorities, and work collaboratively in a team environment.
