About the Position:
Job summary
The successful candidate will assist in leading the Athletics department towards a successful women's golf program.
The position of Assistant Coach for Women's Golf will assist the Head Coach in all areas of running a successful and competitive Division 1 golf program.
The position is vital to the success of the Women's Golf program here at SMU.
The person in this role is directly involved in running day to day activities for the team, teaching student-athletes skills in golf, recruiting student-athletes, fundraising for the program, communicating with student-athletes and other departments on campus.
The position will also assist the Head Coach in planning travel for the team, accompany the Head Coach at conventions, meetings on/off campus, and help the Head Coach with several miscellaneous tasks that the Head Coach cannot attend to.
Essential Functions:
Assisting with team travel arrangements, administrative and budget responsibilities. Assist in overall operations of the golf program and administration.
All aspects of teaching, coaching, evaluating and working with student-athletes in the sport of golf; Assisting in all aspects of practice and player development. Monitoring academic progress of student-athletes. In charge of keeping statistically data of players during practice, qualifying, and tournament rounds. Will manage and run home tournaments.
Assisting in the recruitment of student-athletes. Assist with setting up and instructing team practices. Responsible for cleaning and maintaining good working condition of team van, locker room, team facility and office spaces. In charge of driving the team van to and from the airport and tournament locations.
Corresponding with sponsors; promoting the Women's Golf Program, the Athletics Department and Southern Methodist University through marketing and public relations activities; participating in all areas of fundraising.
Other duties as assigned by Head Coach.
Position requires frequent travel
Position requires regular evening and weekend work
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required.
A minimum of one year of coaching experience at the collegiate level or above is required.
A successful background of at least four years or more of playing experience at the division I level or higher is strongly preferred. Experience recruiting student-athletes and possess a strong recruiting network desired. Division I experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must possess a strong knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Candidate must also be skilled in golf instruction (swing mechanics) and have certifications relating to the sport.
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.
Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. A strong focus on attention to detail is required. Strong project management skills are preferred.
Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of MS Suite. Experience with and or a knowledge of statistical programs (e.g. Trackman, Puttview) is strongly preferred.
