Position Summary:
ITS-Irvine (www.its.uci.edu) is both an Organized Research Unit (ORU) on the UC Irvine campus, and a part of the University of California Multicampus Research Unit (MRU) of the same name (see UC ITS below), which has branches at the Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, and Los Angeles campuses. Since its inception in 1974, ITS-Irvine has served as the focal point of the highly successful transportation research and education enterprise on the University of California, Irvine (UCI) campus that today counts 30+ faculty and research associates, 60+ active graduate students, and growing programming for undergraduate and K-12 outreach and education. Research at ITS-Irvine seeks to address some of today's most significant challenges, including climate change, equity, economic sustainability, and the livability of urban and rural communities through the development of effective transportation policy backed by the research of participating UCI faculty. ITS-Irvine research is funded via direct support from the State of California as well as through grants awarded by a range of sources including regional agencies (Southern California Association of Governments, San Diego Association of Governments, etc.), state agencies (Caltrans, California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission, etc), and national entities (National Science Foundation, US Department of Transportation, US Department of Energy, etc.). ITS-Irvine is in a strong growth phase and is looking to raise the profile of its research to connect with a broader audience and increase its impact. The UC ITS (www.ucits.org) is a network of faculty, research staff, administrative staff, and students dedicated to advancing the state of the art in transportation engineering, planning, and policy to benefit the residents of California, the nation, and the world. Established by the California Legislature in 1947, the UC ITS has branches at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UCLA. The UC ITS seeks to broaden its reach to engage with a diverse collection of stakeholders, ranging from communities in California, to regional and statewide policymakers, to national and global leaders in the transportation and related cross-cutting disciplines.
The Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Irvine (ITS-Irvine) seeks a communications specialist to independently develop, manage, analyze, and refine the moderately complex and comprehensive communications programs for both ITS-Irvine and the systemwide UC Institute of Transportation Studies (UC ITS). The incumbent will serve as the communications expert for ITS-Irvine and UC ITS. They will be responsible for designing, implementing, and executing multi-platform market branding strategies and information campaigns that include written, visual, and digital communications highlighting the research and educational activities conducted by hundreds of faculty, staff, and students at UC Irvine and across the UC system. The Communications Specialist will work with UC ITS management and a dynamic multi-campus policy and engagement team to design, implement, and manage the programs. NOTE: There is a possibility of a hybrid schedule, however, this position will require regular work on campus.
Compensation Range:
$66,300 - $96,900

Master's degree preferred Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related discipline
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans. Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Required Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences. Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications. Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
Preferred:
Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences. Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
