Oregon State Productions is seeking two Visual Storytellers. These will be full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty positions.
Oregon State Productions produces, coordinates and distributes video and film content that advances the reputation and extends the reach of Oregon State University, helping to fulfill the university's land-grant mission to educate the public and improve the wellbeing and prosperity of Oregonians and constituents across the globe.
The Visual Storyteller produces agency-quality nonfiction content of varying lengths, from short web videos to feature documentaries, fulfilling a range of roles including line production, camera work, audio production, editing, writing and post production. The producer also is responsible for developing relationships with Oregon State researchers, faculty and partner agencies and for project management, including managing and securing budgets, scheduling and tracking of distributed work.
This role advances the reputation and reach of Oregon State research and assists in fulfilling the university's land grant mission by producing content that turns data and research into cinematic stories, educating the public about the most vital issues facing our world. The producer will plan, write, shoot and edit a range of projects from feature research documentaries to short promotional videos.
Oregon State Productions is a media team that builds on the university's rich legacy of visual storytelling. Our work has been prominently featured on OSU web properties, including the OSU YouTube channel, in film festivals, broadcast networks and streaming channels. We partner with respected organizations including Travel Oregon, the National Geographic Society, the National Science Foundation and universities across the globe. Our work has been shown at the American Documentary Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, BendFilm, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Oregon Public Broadcasting, the Darkside Cinema, CuriosityStream and more.
In a typical week, the visual storyteller might do some or all of the following:
Brainstorm with OSU Marketing to develop a series of social media videos on the newest strain of hops.
Quickly turn around an edit featuring the university president for broadcast media.
Conduct pre-interviews with students in our top-ranked College of Forestry via Zoom for an upcoming feature on the student logging program.
Give a skills presentation to students and staff in the campus video community.
Film on the deck of a research ship while scientists from our world class marine programs collect seafloor samples.
Spend long hours in a dark editing room preparing a documentary for a festival premiere.
Draft a creative brief for a video feature about an award-winning music program.
Interview an undergraduate researcher about her recent trip to Antarctica.
Answer and send more emails than are probably necessary.
Produce a news story about aquatic jaguars in Brazil using found footage.
Bake chocolate croissants for a multi-department potluck.
Typically requires Bachelor's degree in field related to research of the department or college, Research Writing, Journalism or related field. Professional experience in journalism or editing and design. May require specialized certification or training.

This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
The producer will work on campus, remotely and on location, around the state and potentially globally covering a variety of subjects and field research under a wide range of challenging conditions. The ability to haul gear, handle multiple projects and step into any video production role while delivering high-quality results under deadlines is critical. While weekend and evening work may also be necessary, we also value work/life balance and offer an adaptable office environment where creativity and results take precedence over a rigid schedule.
