Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Computing Sciences Area has an opening for a Scientific/Technology Writer to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will work in a research community, will serve as a communications professional with experience communicating highly complex scientific and technical accomplishments to a broad audience. You will work as part of a group that supports five divisions and the area management, comprising a total of 400+ employees, working directly with staff at all levels. You will receive writing and editing assignments on an as-needed basis and will work under the direction of the Sr. Editor and Sr. Writer.
What You Will Do:
Working under the direction of the senior editor and senior writer, write and edit feature stories, blog posts, flyers and text for web pages within the Computing Sciences Area.
Create and deliver timely information to a variety of audiences, including CS Area staff, Berkeley Lab employees, Government Relations Staff, the U.S. Department of Energy, the broader scientific community and general public. This includes content about research results, accomplishments, annual reports, presentations, collateral, and messages from leadership.
Work with CS Communications Sr. Editor, Sr. Technical Writer and Deputy of Operations and other communications staff to make sure stories achieve the strategic objective.
Contribute to the development of a monthly newsletter of CS Area highlights that will go to DOE program managers, CS area staff, Berkeley Lab Directorate, etc.
What is Required:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, corporate communications, English, or a technical/related field or experience in technical and non-technical writing and/or editing in news/magazine/publications/online communications.
Advanced science writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, story research and concept development skills for clearly communicating highly complex scientific/technical accomplishments and computer hardware and software innovations to a range of audiences.
Experience interacting with high-level internal and external contacts to establish working relationships needed to produce publications for release.
Strong interpersonal communication, teamwork, collaboration and client service skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of colleagues.
Proven ability to be a creative and critical thinker and problem-solver.
Desired Qualifications:
Proficient with both print and electronic publishing technologies such as web publishing software, content management systems, and digital communications practices.
Experience cultivating online communities and using social media, blogs and multimedia tools desirable.
Knowledge of Photoshop and Hootsuite.

Notes:
This is a temporary, 1 year, 14hrs/week, limited appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Cannot exceed 900 hours within a rolling 12-month period.
