The USC Trojan Marching Bandâs (TMB) mission is to provide the University of Southern California with one of the finest marching band programs in the country, while contributing to and supporting the University. The program provides its members with the opportunity to perform music and to develop their individual artistic expression through the vehicle of the ensemble at athletic contests, various University functions, concerts, and ceremonies throughout the calendar year. It is also the function and mission of the "The Spirit of Troy" to be the main vehicle for, and conservators of, school traditions and spirit. The TMB reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs.
The Special Project Manager (SPM) is responsible for assisting the director in managing the business aspects of the TMB, including but not limited to human resources, financial transactions and reporting, special projects, and events.
Special projects include but are not limited to annual giving programs (2-3 annual fundraising initiatives focused on current needs of the band (i.e. travel, uniforms, and instruments), branded merchandise creation and sales, and engaging parents and families of band members.
Special events include but are not limited to fundraising events, spring concert (in partnership with Sr. Coordinator of Travel and Concerts), family receptions, and tailgate parties.
The SPM will work alongside the professional and student office staff for the successful implementation of all TMB affairs. The SPM will assist the Director in supervising the Senior Coordinator of Travel and Concerts, the Public Relations Director, the Assistant Director of Gig Bands, and the Alumni Coordinator. Additional responsibilities may be assigned given the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate. The SPM will attend all staff meetings and will act on behalf of the Director at their request.
In this role, the SPM will make hiring, promotional and salary decisions in partnership with the Director and in accordance with University Policy.
The SPM will work closely with the USC Business and Advancement Offices and maintain an open line of communication for the successful management of the bandâs operations. The successful candidate will develop strong and professional relationships to assist with the execution and completion of the TMBâs goals and objectives.
Committee service will be an integral portion of the SPMâs yearly duties. The SPM will serve on committees as needed or as deemed appropriate by the Director. The SPM will also attend all TMB board meetings.
The administrative duties of the SPM are carried out during the 40-hour workweek in addition to participation in certain band events in the evenings and on weekends as deemed by the Director or necessitated by the TMB program. Certain band activities are contingent upon the current semester. The semester specific duties are listed below:
Fall Semester:
Assist the Director with the implementation of Band Camp
Assist in the planning and execution of fundraising events
Assist in the planning and execution of High School Band Day or similar outreach
Attend all home football games
Attend full-band trips (Weekender, Notre Dame, Post-Season Championship and Bowl Games)
Attend class trips as deemed necessary by the Director
Spring Semester:
Summer Months:Â
Assist the Director with Summer Performances
Attend all Orientation/Recruitment Events
Assist in the planning and implementation of Band Camp
The ideal candidate will exhibit a commitment to creative output, possess excellent communications skills and demonstrate highly advanced organizational skills to maintain a broad spectrum of projects, tasks, and relationships. They will be responsible for budget management, marketing and communications including but not limited to website development and maintenance and other digital communications, personnel administration and volunteer management.
The qualifications for this position include a bachelorâs degree, or a combination of education or experience, five years (minimum) of successful business management, preferably in an academic environment, event planning and annual giving/fundraising.
