The Rockefeller University seeks an Associate Editorial Director to join Communications and Public Affairs. Reporting to and working collaboratively with the Director of Communications, the Associate Editorial Director will play a key role in shaping strategic communications activities to maintain and elevate Rockefeller's public image. Will contribute leadership in planning and executing external and internal communications programs and create high-profile content for print and electronic media such as the university's award-winning magazine Seek and its website and newsletters. The Associate Editorial Director will work with a close-knit team of writers, editors, web producers, and design partners to write, edit, proofread and promote institutional content including science news and internal news, magazine features, web pages, viewbooks, and letters. Will work with other editors and writers to ensure that communications materials meet the university's high editorial standards, and craft authentic messages that build trust and engagement around Rockefeller's scientific mission. Will identify and execute opportunities to elevate the university's public image and grow its audiences, track the performance of digital content, using this data to inform communications strategy, provide sophisticated, politically astute communications support to university executives, and proactively establish and maintain strong, professional relationships with Rockefeller Faculty members and administrators. Additional duties will be assigned as needed to advance the efforts of a busy, interactive group of fellow communications professionals.
Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, or a related field, or in the biological sciences required; advanced degree preferred. Must have 7+ years of relevant experience in academic or non-profit (reporting or editorial experience in science journalism may offset some of this requirement) and a robust track record and demonstrated flair as an editor and writer, preferably with a focus on science medicine or technology. Excellent editorial judgment and diplomacy, and the ability to understand the varied perspectives of a diverse set of constituents required. Solid experience crafting multi-faceted communications materials that position and elevate the perception of an organization needed. Must have excellent project management skills, self-motivation, and ability to tackle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Strong collaborative disposition and people skills, and a commitment to active engagement in the campus community required. Knowledge of content strategy and web analytics, and experience developing photo and video assets, are highly desirable.
