DESCRIPTION
The Director of Development, Foundation and Research Relations (DOD – FFR) fulfills an important role in UC San Diego's Advancement program. Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Foundation and Research Relations, the Director has responsibility for planning activities, setting priorities, and determining effective strategies designed to maximize foundation support to the University. Responsibility will focus on foundation prospects capable of grants of $250,000 - $1,000,000+, with an emphasis on grants of $500,000 and above, from a portfolio of highly visible, prominent foundations in the U.S. where long-term relationships need to be maintained and strengthened. The Director is responsible for managing a prospect/donor portfolio in various stages of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
They work collaboratively with faculty, academic leadership, and development officers to create and implement strategies for approaching foundations; serve as a recognized campus expert in foundation engagement; and regularly have impact and influence on campus policy and program development. The Director's portfolio includes many of the campus's most complex and important foundation partners. The Incumbent will be encouraged to operate autonomously and to exercise initiative and authority within general parameters set by the Executive Director, and to represent the Executive Director and the Department whenever necessary.
The Director will apply knowledge and understanding of UC San Diego and the strength of multi-sector collaboration to better position the University for large impact grant funding. The holder of this position must be comfortable working with prominent foundation leaders and senior volunteers; and must have a successful record of building foundation partnerships and securing foundation support for complex organizations. Incumbent will work collaboratively with other units within Advancement as well as the Office of Research Affairs and Office of Contract and Grant Administration. QUALIFICATIONS
Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques. Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure grants, contracts, and gifts.
Expert level skills in maintaining confidentiality. Demonstrated success at fundraising by developing and implementing strategic solicitation fund-raising plans that incorporate a concise definition of goals, targeted audiences and strategies in-line with institution and academic goals in higher education and closing gifts ($100,000+) from foundations, both local and national.
Proven record of writing solicitations for a significant project/gift ($250,000 - $1,000,000+, with an emphasis on gifts of $500,000 and above) directed to foundations.
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
