The Office of Diversity & Inclusion works to empower students while collaborating with staff, faculty, alumnx, and community partners to implement programs and services that support the University’s commitment to inclusivity, equity, and social justice. In addition, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion staff develops and implements programs and services that affirm and support the retention and graduation of Black/African American, Asian/Pacific American, Latinx/Chicanx, international, and/or queer and trans+/gender non-conforming students. The Program Coordinator reports to the Director of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion within the division of Student Life at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
This is a 40 hour per week, 12 month, P&A position. Job Code 9764P3
Salary Range: $43,475.15 - $59,764.28
Coordinate Office of Diversity and Inclusion Cultural Outreach & Retention Effort (CORE) Mentorship Programs (40%)
- Coordinate all aspects of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion (CORE) Mentorship Program including individual student meetings, Fall and Spring trainings and receptions, and workshops.
- Conduct an ongoing assessment of the effectiveness of the ODI CORE Mentor Program to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of students.
- Regularly communicate with students notifying them of resources and opportunities.
- Work with mentors to match them with students and to provide support and resources for their participation in the ODI CORE Mentor Program.
- Maintain mentorship and scholarships web page information and bulletin board.
Marketing and Outreach (20%)
- Publicize student engagement information
- Assist with coordination of engagement community opportunities.
- Work with Coordinator of Tutoring and Pre-Collegiate Initiatives to connect students with Campus service opportunities.
- Assist Admissions and other appropriate University personnel involved in the recruitment of underrepresented students including Asian, Latinx/Chicanx, Black, African American, and queer and trans+/gender non-conforming students.
Provide Direct Support to UMD Black Student Association Organization in Their Leadership and Community Development Endeavors (20%)
- Help facilitate student involvement and leadership development of African and African American Students.
- Work with the campus community to address African and African American students equity and diversity issues on campus
- Serve as the point of contact for the African American Students and collaborate with the staff in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion to provide seamless services to other student organizations
- Assist Black Student Association in collaborating with other Multicultural student organizations.
- Coordinate an annual leadership development retreat for the Black Student Association.
- Assist Black Student Association with getting connected to engagement opportunities on and off campus
- Ensure involvement of Black Student Association in the Multicultural Welcome Week Activities and the End of the Year Recognition Reception.
- Assist Black Student Association with preparing and submitting student service fee proposals.
Provide Direct Advising To Students in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion (20%)
- Advice, counsel, and mentor students with academic, career, and personal objectives.
- Track each semester and annually the academic achievement and retention through graduation of students.
While fulfilling their job responsibilities, all ODI staff are expected to:
- Prepare annual reports on programs and activities.
- Assist director with various special projects, workshops and assignments.
- Work actively to create a positive and productive work environment.
- Be effective spokespeople for their area/unit with others both inside and outside ODI.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate substantial knowledge of issues regarding diversity.
- Understand and support teamwork in the workplace.
- Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
-BA/BS plus at least 4 years of related experience;(Master’s Degree & Graduate Level Internship in related field can substitute for years of related experience)
-Ability to effectively demonstrate an understanding of the needs and concerns of Students of Color and their families; including first-generation college students
-Demonstrate commitment to diversity.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Master's degree in Education, Psychology or related field and at least one year of experience in higher education, student retention and recruitment.
-Experience with PeopleSoft.
-Demonstrated excellent customer service, public relations, and communication skills in both interpersonal and group settings.
-Experience and knowledge of issues concerning communities of African and African American descent in a predominantly white campus.
-Experience working with ethnically diverse and underrepresented populations.
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively
