The Associate Director, Multimedia is a member of the Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) creative team, reporting to the Creative Director. The Associate Director, Multimedia is an established multimedia professional with outstanding storytelling capabilities in a variety of styles and formats. This position requires excellent editorial judgment, management experience, and hands-on filmmaking skills. Leads team in identifying, evaluating, and addressing continuous improvement of workflow processes and opportunities. Guides and motivates a team of content specialists in writing, directing, producing, filming, lighting, motion graphics, editing, and sound design. The ability to balance short- and long-term deadlines, accept and process feedback, and work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels are essential skills for this role.
The Associate Director, Multimediais responsible for leading all aspects of the video production process. Overseeing onsite producers/editors and administrative aspects of production including filming/camera operations, on-set shoot direction and interviews, ideation, managing cast and crew, script writing, video editing and post-production, and creating work schedules. This role also manages freelance resources and planning to ensure successful on-budget and on-time video creation.
Additional key responsibilities include developing creative and innovative methods to package fresh and existing content in multiple formats tailored to the university's various platforms. The position guides staff and interns and identifies opportunities to collaborate with affiliates around the university to improve the overall quality of multimedia content.
Critical to the role is the ability to align creative concepts to the strategic goals and mission of the department and the university; strong storytelling and editorial judgment; tact and diplomacy; and the capacity to operate simultaneously as a manager and a hands-on contributor. Oversees video content reviews with key stakeholders, including and approval from key internal and external partners.
Serve in a hands-on capacity for priority work including serving the President's Office, strategic initiatives, or campaigns, directing, filming, and editing, supervising multiple projects simultaneously
Supervise video and related multimedia for films, audio recordings, interactive/animations, and storytelling efforts
Manage a team of film editors and other related talent, ensuring resources are allocated according to project needs
Experience producing social media videos, including GIFs, loops, time-lapse, and animation.
Use independent judgment to assess the effectiveness of all video content and executional direction
Partner with Creative Director to ensure design standards are upheld; coordinate with designers and photographers as needed
Partner with Director of Content Strategy to analyze data and various measures of engagement, to improve reach of content across channels
Directs activities pre/postproduction including casting, location scouting, permits, budgets, and filming
Incorporate accessibility requirements and techniques (captioning, audio descriptions, use of color, contrast) into the team's workflow
Recommend and implement updates and improvements to video technology, animation, and graphic trends
Prior experience in a fast-paced, dynamic, highly creative, and collaborative environment is required

Minimum of 8+ years of experience as a Video Producer/Editor with a demonstrated track record in creative execution and management is required
Master's degree in film or journalism, multimedia/visual communications, or related field
Maintain and operate a variety of video camera equipment
Advanced Adobe Creative Cloud skills (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
An online portfolio with current projects
Experience with project management tools
Familiar with accessibility guidelines for WCAG 2.0 standards and audio description services (audio-visual translation)
Experience with video/audio hosting platforms such as WordPress, Vimeo, Simplecast, Zoom, and YouTube
Excellent content judgment
Requires occasional domestic or international travel; on-location planning and filming
A positive, collegial attitude and a high level of professionalism are essential
Background in producing multimedia for a non-profit organization
Experience with video storage/management services
