Assistant Dean of College DEI
Position Summary
The Assistant Dean of College Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) provides leadership in building a sense of community within the College of Nursing (CON) and supporting initiatives that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice throughout all areas of the CON, with a broad vision of diversity in achieving institutional equity and inclusive practices. The Director is responsible for coordinating integrated approaches to increase diversity and inclusivity across the CON; promote a multicultural environment for faculty, staff, and students; and identify and develop strategies to address unequal access and outcomes for historically underrepresented groups. The Assistant Dean of College DEI is a 100% fixed-term administrative position.
Duties and Responsibilities
Administration
- Guides the strategic planning for integration of inclusive practices through all aspects of the CON.
- Participates in committees and other administrative duties as assigned by the Dean, including representing the CON in campus wide DEI committees.
- Works closely with the CON’s Faculty Excellence Advocate and the CON’s Human Resources Administrator to engage in faculty searches, hiring, reappointment, promotion, and tenure processes.
- Works with the Dean to provide input and consultation regarding elections for the CON and university committees.
- Provides guidance regarding DEI in the areas of recruitment, retention, climate, and curriculum.
- Participates in external accreditation and external program review processes, submissions, and follow-up actions.
- Participates in national meetings related to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education and specifically nursing education.
- Demonstrates effective professional interpersonal communication and upholds the CON’s values.
External Affairs
- Executes public relations strategies, liaising with community leaders, legislatures, media, and other external organizations to raise awareness of MSU and CON DEI initiatives.
- Collaborates with other MSU programs on DEI initiatives.
- Is an active member of the Council of Diversity Deans (CODD), bringing back initiatives and information to the college community.
- Contributes to the planning and participates in events that are consistent with DEI initiatives and multicultural activities, such as seminars.
- Collaborates with the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations on fundraising efforts to support DEI initiatives.
Research and Education
- Consults with researchers to inform grant submissions regarding DEI and achieve diversity in study participation.
- Initiates and participates in grant submissions designed to increase the diversity of the faculty, staff and/or the student body.
- Participates with CON Curriculum Committees on teaching activities and course evaluations on inclusion of DEI content.
- Facilitates DEI professional development opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
Student Affairs
- Collaborates with program directors in providing student mentoring in the areas of DEI.
- Serves as a consultant to the “Achieving Culturally Competent Education and Student Success!” (ACCESS) Program, working on quality improvement initiatives regarding programming.
- Contributes to the promotion of DEI during student orientations, pinning and other engagements.

Required Degree
Doctorate -Nursing or related field
Minimum Requirements
- A doctoral degree in nursing or related health field.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communications skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
