Job Summary:
Performs duties of mail clerk within Regenstein Library and interlibrary messenger. Coordinates dock activities with shipping contractors and other users to ensure Library needs are met with the use of the loading dock. Duties include sorting and preparing inbound/outgoing U.S. Mail, UPS, Fed Ex, DHL and Faculty Exchange and meters for postage; handling of bulk mailings; operating the Library-owned van to transport books, mail, packages and furniture between campus Library locations; making trips to deliver or pick-up material within the Chicago area, Assists with building maintenance items and event support.
Responsibilities:
Becomes familiar with staff and with the departments of the University Library system in order to accurately and quickly sort the U.S. Mail, UPS, Fed Ex, DHL and Faculty Exchange communications.
Sorts and prepares outgoing U.S. mail and meters for postage; helps with handling of occasional bulk mailings; deposits afternoon U.S. mail in a postal box; answers the telephone as needed, accepts deliveries to the loading dock; in absence of supervisor, monitors traffic entering and exiting at Regensteinâ™s rear entrance. Monitors traffic through the dock overhead garage door. Assists and troubleshoots the dock Verti-packs (trash compactors). Delivers empty trash totes to Library spaces as needed.
Acts as interlibrary messenger: Operating the library-owned van to transport books, mail, packages and furniture between campus Library locations and to and from local vendors.
Makes trips to deliver or pick-up material within the Chicagoland area; including stops at other campus buildings as directed; loads and unloads the van; monitors van for maintenance; Performs local van maintenance (cleaning the van , tire pressure checks); notifies section head when repairs are necessary.
Walks to local campus locations to deliver and retrieve Library shipments.
Build credible relationships across the organization to help facilitate effective employee communications, problem solving and solution based outcomes.
Performs duties within the departmentâ™s Building Services section, as needed.
Assisting with assembly and installation of Library equipment and furnishings; arranging furniture and audiovisual equipment for Library meetings, conferences, lectures and dinners; helping to move Library equipment and furnishings within Library departments or from department to department and other related duties as assigned.
Monitors the Dock and rear doors provides access to facilities staff, contractors, library donors and shipping providers.
Loads and off loads pallets of delivered items breaking them down and delivering to designated locations.

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Experience:
Two years related experience working in shipping and receiving ( 3 years preferred).
Two years of moving experience preferred.
Experience with Endicia, UPS WorldShip and Fed Ex shipping software preferred.
Experience in a higher education environment preferred.Â
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team required.
Licenses and Certifications:
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
A Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel) and working with database software systems required.
Ability to learn a range of position-related software applications required
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Routinely lift moderate to heavy weights (up to 75lbs).
Move chairs and tables.
Stand and walk for long periods of the day.
Bend, crouch, or stoop
Climb multiple flights of stairs
Sit for 2 hours or more
Use computers extensively for 2 hours or more
Stand for 2 hours to 4 hours
Able to work outdoors in seasonal climate conditions
