Position Summary and Responsibilities The Vassar Office of Communications seeks to hire a Communications Associate to support the department's efforts, including general public relations support, as well as project management. This position will provide an opportunity to learn key public relations skills, and garner experience that will help build a set of competencies important to success in the burgeoning communications industry.
The Office of Communications often undertakes projects that span multiple divisions, including Editorial and Publications, the web team, the News Bureau and the video team, and Social Media team. The Communications Associate will keep a calendar with target dates, convene meetings of department members and follow-up accordingly. The Associate will keep department members on schedule to complete projects by their stated deadlines.
Additionally, the Office of Communications runs a variety of public relations efforts, including writing pitches and press releases regarding faculty initiatives, creating video pieces on these initiatives, and covering campus life. This position will report to the Associate Vice President for Communications/Deputy to the Vice President.
Project Management, including use of Asana
Assist in briefing documents for interviews, write basic press releases, and draft memos
Internet research on a particular reporter or topic
Arrange community meetings
Staff site visits and events
Supervise one to three part-time student workers
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor of Arts, and have a desire to work in the communications/public relations industry. An affinity for news and storytelling coupled with a crisp writing style will also be a benefit.
