Director of Communications for Student Experience is responsible for developing a communications strategy using multiple platforms (web, newsletters, social media, video) for communications about student experiences across the Medical Center (Schools of Medicine, Biomedical Graduation Education program, School of Nursing & Health Studies) and works closely with the relevant deans for each school/programs at Georgetown University Medical Center to support the medical center's academic mission of education, research, service and patient care. They are part of a medical center communications team that includes editorial, digital and multimedia professionals in support of the medical center's missions in addition to direct support and collaboration with the Office of the Executive Vice President.
The
Director of Communications is an experienced, self-motivated communications professional who is inspired and motivated by the education of health and health sciences professionals, and the research environment. They take initiative and demonstrate exceptional judgement in determining balanced editorial direction in a complex environment.
In order to effectively engage with all aspects of the student experience, spanning academics, events, research, and volunteerism, the Director at times works outside traditional business hours and beyond the office/ campus setting. Flexibility and creativity are essential to be able to capture the full range of student activities from the classroom to the community. To be successful, the Director is responsible for cultivating relationships with key stakeholders including deans for education and student affairs (or similar), student organizations and student leaders, and with leaders at our academic partner, MedStar Health.
Work Interactions Under the direction of the Associate Vice president for Communications, the
Director of Communications works collaboratively with the medical center's deans to ensure alignment of message, objectives and outcomes. They are key to student experience communications around the establishment of the new School of Nursing and School of Health. The Director is supported by the assistant director for digital communications and the web content editor, and works collaboratively with a Director of Communications who has a general focus related to administrative support.
The
Director of Communications for Student Experience develops/writes/edits/records (digital audio/visual) a high volume of sharp content for distribution on multiple platforms (social media, websites, video, e-newsletters) to engage, document and share student stories at the School of Medicine and the biomedical graduate education program, along with the soon-to-launch (summer 2022) School of Nursing and School of Health (now the School of Nursing & Health Studies). Content focus includes educational courses/projects, events, community service, and celebrations with a particular focus on activities promoting social justice, inclusion, service to others/community outreach, achievement and scholarship. The Director views stories through an inclusive lens and approach to interviewing faculty, staff, and students of all backgrounds and life experiences, and incorporates such perspectives into content to advance GUMC's commitment to racial justice.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, journalism, public relations or related field
- At least 10 years of communications experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience) in higher education, health/medicine or health sciences with a strong focus on writing
- Exceptional judgement that aligns with core values and mission objectives
- Experience working with diverse constituencies is preferable
- Self-motivated, strong critical thinking skills, and ability to plan collaboratively and work independently within a complex organization
- Excellent feature and news writing skills and editing
- Outstanding organization and project management skills necessary for developing content for publication and dissemination across multiple platforms
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Strategic, creative, and results-driven mindset
- Proficiency with photography/videography via smartphone and editing using Adobe and/or iPhone products
- Ability to generate editorial website content for GUMC schools/programs to elevate student-focused stories and information
- Ability to prepare content (i.e., story, video, social media posts) on a short timeline
- Outstanding professional relationship building skills to cultivate deans, student leaders and other stakeholders
- Comprehensive understanding of how to leverage social media for student engagement in higher education;
- High computer literacy with proficiency in email, MS Office, Google products
- Desire to advance racial and social justice objectives through GUMC communications work
- A deep understanding of higher education objectives, challenges and opportunities - especially in the Jesuit tradition
- Experience working with diverse constituencies preferred
