Strategic Tobacco Industry Campaigns Associate, TakeAPart Initiative
Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
Location: Washington, D.C.
Type: Full Time
Internal Number: STIDCA-08
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (the Campaign) seeks applications for a Strategic Tobacco Industry Campaigns Associate working to successfully isolate, discredit, and neutralize the tobacco industry through our TakeAPart Program.
TakeAPart aims to take apart the tobacco industry's power and also to provide opportunities for anyone in the world to take a part in the movement to break the link between tobacco companies and policy makers. To do this, we are building a global community of TakeAPart activists and a talented team to lead the program.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of one of the world’s leading corporate accountability efforts and work with cutting edge social media strategies and new crowdsourcing technology. The Strategic Tobacco Industry Campaigns Associate will report to and work closely with the Director of Strategic Tobacco Industry Campaigns and head of the TakeAPart initiative to develop campaigns in support of tobacco control policy objectives and organizations in targeted countries.
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is fighting for a world free of the death and disease caused by tobacco. We work in low- and middle-income countries – where over 80 percent of the world’s smokers live – to support the adoption and implementation of proven solutions that reduce tobacco use and save lives. Over the last 15 years we have worked with local partners and allies in low- and middle-income countries to prevent over 35 million premature deaths!
The Campaign has been designated as one of five partner organizations to coordinate activities under the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, working with governments and non-governmental organizations to implement effective measures to reduce tobacco use. The Campaign has active initiatives in low-and middle-income countries around the world where the highest rates of tobacco use are found including Indonesia, China, India, Bangladesh and Russia, in addition to its longstanding program in the United States.
What You’ll Accomplish
Report to and work closely with the Director of the TakeAPart program to develop, implement, and support our tobacco industry campaigns in partnership with colleagues at Tobacco-Free Kids and tobacco-control advocates in our priority countries.
Monitor critical tobacco industry business relationships and practices, identify points of vulnerability, and help design appropriate campaigns to isolate them. In coordination with the TakeAPart team, the Strategic Tobacco Industry Campaigns Associate also leads the development of the monthly tobacco industry interference report.
Respond to developments and campaign opportunities, ensuring our global activist community is promptly informed and engaged, as well as identifying and maximizing opportunities for campaign escalation.
Manage TakeAPart’s online advocacy portfolio – identify, draft, and publish regular content for our 300k+ social media community, proposing, drafting, and publishing new engagement opportunities on TakeAPart.org, and manage updates to the TakeAPart.org site.
Collaborate with partners in low- and middle-income countries to support campaigns to expose tobacco industry efforts to influence policy-makers and undermine the policy process.
Prepare campaign materials including reports, fact sheets, presentations, briefing papers, online resources, and toolkits.
Support the development and implementation of campaign training for the Campaign’s grantees and partners.
Working with the Director of Strategic Tobacco Industry Campaigns, 5-10% of time would include supporting industry strategy and campaigns for projects with our Global Health Advocacy Incubator.
