The Web Developer works as part of a multidisciplinary web team to develop and support websites built on the WordPress CMS. Specifically, this role is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of web interfaces, including the universityâ™s primary web themes, plugins and other digital products. This position will report to the Director of Web Development.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Creates new frontend web solutions to meet functional and brand needs of the university using modern web standards and best practices.
Program, test, debug, document, and implement new WordPress themes and plugins.
Provides technical support for, and regular updates and enhancements to, the universityâ™s primary WordPress themes and plugins.
Provides technical support for, and regular updates and enhancements to, websites and web themes.
Trains partners and staff on how to add/maintain website content.
Researches new web solutions based on emerging trends and best practices.
3+ yearsâ™ experience developing websites using open-source technology.
Can demonstrate examples of building custom web sites using WordPress.
Experience working with modern front-end tools/frameworks like SASS, CSS postprocessors, jQuery, React/Backbone, Grunt/Gulp, Webpack and others.
Some API familiarity.
Knowledge of 3D development tools and concepts; ThreeJS, Babylon, Canvas, etc.
Experience with media hosting, streaming, embedding, and customizing players.
Experience writing custom server-side applications in PHP, including writing code to interface with data in an SQL database like MySQL.
Knowledge of user experience principles.
Understanding of web accessibility standards.
Awareness of performance implications and best practices.
The ability to create and test technical solutions while accounting for cross browser/device capabilities.
Contributions to open-source projects.
Basic understanding of typography and design and the ability to create simple and usable interfaces.
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and extrapolating visual information from XD documents.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience in a customer-facing role.
Prior professional experience in a higher education is a plus, but not a requirement.
Experience with LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) web development.
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to web standards and professionalism.
A curiosity to constantly learn about new programming tools and techniques and a desire to share your knowledge with others.
Ability to prioritize and complete multiple projects simultaneously with only general supervision.
An aptitude to quickly and effectively adapt to new circumstances and technologies.
Ability to estimate the time it will take to complete a required task.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals who donâ™t have the same level of technical knowledge about a project. Â
Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team.
The willingness to work extra hours, when needed, to meet a project deadline.
Undergraduate degree in related field or three years of experience in a web development role.
Experience programming with PHP or similar Object Oriented server side language.
Experience with WordPress, Linux/Apache, MacOS.
Experience using a version control system like Git or SVN.
$49,000.00 - $83,800.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
