The General Manager, Aviation Insurance Claims role is responsible for the direct oversight of the Risk Management Department’s liability claims team. This team consists of Senior Analysts, Claim Processors, and contingent workers who interface with the company’s aviation insurers to report, investigate, and resolve liability insurance claims involving Delta and its various subsidiaries. Common types of claims and lawsuits handled by this department include but are not limited to (1) injuries to passengers or other third-parties (2) loss or damage to baggage and cargo and (3) damage to the property of other airlines or airport authorities. In addition, this position will provide guidance and direction on insurance-related issues involving aircraft hull, spare part, and hangarkeeper claims which arise in connection with Delta’s Technical Operations Department.
This role has responsibility for overseeing a large volume of cases on a worldwide basis, many of which involve high-profile issues, large damage demands, complex legal discovery issues, and/or the potential to establish legal precedent. The General Manager provides oversight and training for a team of internal individual contributors while also managing relationships and monitoring the performance of various external business partners (insurers, insurance broker, outside counsel, and other vendors).
The General Manager, Aviation Insurance Claims acts as the system administrator for the department’s Risk Management Information System (RMIS) which houses data for the various types of aviation insurance claims. This includes responsibility for the day-to-day functioning of the system as well as continued development of system workflows to facilitate and improve the claim handling process.
In addition, this position fulfills the following cross-divisional functions: (1) acts as the Risk Management Department representative on the Emergency Response Planning Council and has significant responsibilities in the event of an aircraft accident or terrorist event, (2) collaborates with the Legal Department with regard to the implementation of legal holds and eDiscovery, (3) protects the airline’s brand by coordinating with the Corporate Communications Department and/or Social Media Department on cases involving actual or threatened media attention, (4) analyzes and reports claim metric data/trends to executive leadership within Finance and Safety Departments (5) provides input and direction to Customer Care regarding claim-related correspondence addressed to the airline’s executive leadership team.
Some travel is required to attend claim reviews, legal proceedings, and other industry events on an as-needed basis.
College degree required, Juris Doctorate degree is preferred
Must have prior experience managing people
Previous experience with an airline’s Risk Management or Legal Department, aviation insurance company, or law firm is beneficial
Should understand the legal process and be familiar with common concepts regarding aviation law (Federal Preemption, Warsaw/Montreal Treaties, etc.)
Familiarity with a Risk Management Information System (RMIS)
Must be able to create spreadsheets and presentations using Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint
Needs to be sufficiently mature to work on multiple projects concurrently and to handle confidential material
A sense of urgency and responsiveness to meet deadlines is required
Must possess strong technical, analytical, organizational, decision making and administrative skills and be capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously
Must have the ability to perform research and analysis of risk management problems with attention to detail and prepare written recommendations to management as required
Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with fellow employees and persons outside the company who are involved in insurance matters is necessary
Must be performing satisfactorily in present position
