General Summary Reporting to the Director of Academic Continuity and Engagement, the Assistant Director assists in the leadership of the department and oversees directly programs and activities targeting military-connected students. Promotes retention, inclusion, and engagement of students across the university through proactive and reactive efforts utilizing data-informed techniques. Manages the data distribution for retention efforts to specialized support offices like TRiO and Athletic Academic Advising (AAA) and 9 undergraduate colleges. Coordinates resources, programs, and initiatives related to veteran students. Executes and manages all VA-related educational benefits for military-connected students which is a program that is roughly $9 million in educational benefits through several benefit programs for over 600 students, including unique financial counseling and academic guidance for all military-connected students using these benefits and resolves all complex issues pertaining to education benefits with the VA directly. Establishes and assesses learning outcomes for student veteran populations as well as tracks and reports on veteran achievement. As the university expert on military students is the primary point-of-contact across the university and with external partners including the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration which includes making sure DePaul remains compliant with the VA regulations as well as recognized Military Friendly practices. Responsibilities & Duties
Manages day-to-day compliance and administration of VA Benefits as the University's Veteran Certifying Official.
Calculates eligibility and coordinates with Financial Aid to post-awards, disburse payments, verify eligibility, review enrollment, and adjust financial aid packages for every veteran student and military-benefit eligible student each quarter. Through Federal VA processes, certify enrollment each quarter for all students using VA benefits.
Processes refunds as needed for veteran student accounts after application of applicable VA educational benefits and other financial aid. As a part of aid distribution, produces, updates, and leads the distribution of information from DePaul and the federal government about veteran benefits.
Reconciles monies received related to the VA educational benefits totaling over $9 million dollars and over 1,500 wire transfers.
Counsels individual veteran students on benefits, strategies for maximizing benefits, and maintaining compliance. Supervises a student assistant associated with aiding in these processes. Collaborates with university partners to ensure adherence to applicable law, regulations, and communicate to students and others as needed.
Manages the effort for data distribution for at-risk student lists to support offices and all nine undergraduate colleges.
Tracks data to ensure all students have assigned intervention point person. Assists in the development and implementation of strategic plans for retention improvement for all undergraduate students.
The Director develops and leads the execution of initiatives, events, and programs for student veterans.
Manages student transitions for target populations, success maps utilization, and other targeted interventions for especially military-connected students. Collaborates with university partners to increase student veteran participation in high-impact programs and campus-wide events and implement campus awareness programs focused on these populations.
Promotes office programs and events and leads student staff in processes of marketing and communication, including design, edits, and dissemination of promotional materials.
Leads department student staff in developmental opportunities and retreats.
Maintains and develops relationships to a network of resources and university partners support for retention efforts and sharing of this information with staff and student staff (mentors, coaches, etc.). Supports Admissions with recruitment efforts by participating in recruitment events, college visits, and meeting with prospective students, especially veterans.
Tracks and reports on department retention efforts and overall metrics for ACE department efforts.
Develops program outcomes related to divisional learning domains and university learning goals.
Performs annual assessment of program outcomes. Maintains data on student participation in key activities.
Maintains up-to-date research and publications related to veteran and other adult student populations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Master's degree in higher education, education, or related field.
At least 5 years of experience in financial aid experience or financial budgeting experience.
Experience with adult and non-traditional students.
Experience as designated veteran certifying official.
At least 3 years of experience in Student Affairs with program planning, event management, grant management, and program assessment experience.
Veteran experience is highly.
Directly supervises a team of eleven student staff, including student coordinators and a part-time certifying assistant.
Directly supervises over a dozen front desk student workers and EDGE team members.
Manages all veteran-related funds approaching $9M annually and a programming budget of up to $50,000, including external funding.
Other Skills & Abilities Required
Experience with Microsoft Excel required.
Experience with Federal VA Once Web interface required.
Solid understanding of VA educational benefits programs.
Solid understanding of federal financial aid regulations.
