Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Assistant Director of Communications will promote and protect the image of the University through strategic external communication. Direct Media Relations Operations; manage responses to media inquiries and coordinate interview requests; identify and pitch feature stories and faculty experts to local, state, regional and national media outlets; assist senior leadership with media/interview preparation/strategy; coordinate media events and press conferences
Direct University News Operations; write and edit news releases and feature stories, often in collaboration with Admissions or Advancement campaigns; coordinate photo, video and graphic design needs related to news coverage; manage hometown publicity, including distribution of Dean’s List and Commencement List
Manage External Crisis Communication; serve as the University’s public Information officer; serve as a member of the University’s Emergency Response Team; provide strategic communication counsel for senior leadership; collaborate with Director of Communications on internal crisis communication strategy
Hire, train and supervise staff of student writers
Bachelor’s degree required; preference for communications/journalism
Minimum of three years’ experience, particularly in media relations, public affairs or related field
