Junior Specialist Step I- Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Grimsrud Lab, JPF04299
NATURE AND PURPOSE
The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (75% EFFORT) A. Work under the direction of the Principle Investigator on research projects. Specific project focus for this position includes, but not limited to pharmacological and genetic studies with an emphasis in pain drugs and pharmacogenetics, clinical and basic science studies, as well as bioinformatics and statistical analysis of complex data sets and development of novel models and network analysis approaches. Candidates should have a background in research (e.g. animal and/or human) and bioinformatics and data modeling. Additionally, this position also requires development of training and tools necessary for the conduct of the research. Coordinate research activities involving clinical pharmacology, including patient enrollment, sample and data collection, and analysis. Assists with grant and manuscript preparation.
B. Assists with budget management of grants and supply acquisition.
C. Evaluation of performance in research activities is subject to the applicable individual project in specialized areas, as documented by any of the following:
Publications that acknowledge the Junior Specialist's significant and meaningful contribution to the work.
Publications on which the Junior Specialist is an author.
Other evidence (e.g., letters from collaborators or principal investigators) that work done by the Junior Specialist contributed to publishable research.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (23% EFFORT)
Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations, such as American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Pharmacogenetics Research Network, and International Society of Pharmacometrics to learn more about the newest advances in bioinformatic analysis and to attend meetings and workshops to gain additional expertise in these areas.
Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (2% EFFORT)
May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise. For example, communicate with Shriner's headquarters in Florida for developing and using the online data management system (ONCORE), as well as work with and external IRB (WIRB) committees. We will also be working with the PharmGKB group based out of Stanford and other pharmacogenetic consortiums to gain expertise and assistance with data analysis and curation.
Participate in activities of committee related to the research work.
Salary: Step I - $46,800 Annually, 100% FTE

Term of Appointment: One year with possibility to extend. Non-Exempt appointment based on the needs of the research project. 100% Appointment.
