UCSF Public Affairs, a part of UCSF's Office of Communications, is dedicated to communicating UCSF's excellence in patient care, research, education, and public mission. We seek a seasoned health and medicine communicator and strong team player to join our team as a Science Writer / Media Relations
Science Writer / Media Relations cover a variety of beats, identifying newsworthy stories in basic research, clinical research, patient care, and education. They develop communication materials to tell these stories and then work with journalists at the local and national level to place them, with the goal of heightening awareness about UCSF and/or UCSF Health.
The Science Writer / Media Relations communicates through a variety of means (news releases, web stories, fact sheets, media pitches, talking points, video scripts, etc.) that usually require translating science or medical innovations into language for the lay public. The Science Writer / Media Relations also communicates through social media and collaborates with Communications colleagues to identify opportunities for producing video, podcasts, and infographics. The Science Writer / Media Relations oversees and implements comprehensive media/communications campaigns and serves as a specialist in advancing UCSF's reputation and brand through the media, working strategically with faculty and leadership, preparing them for media interviews, and providing counsel/training on media response. This includes addressing sensitive and/or complex institutional policies or practices, and serving on emergency response teams, as needed.
Public Affairs includes one team focused on UCSF's research and education missions, the other focused on the clinical enterprise, UCSF Health. Both teams also work to promote our commitment to our community and the underprivileged as part of our public mission. For this particular position, we seek a strong writer, collaborative team player, and media specialist with a record of substantial media placements to report on UCSF's innovative biomedical research enterprise.
