The Midland Theater is currently seeking a full time Executive Director to oversee all musical, theatrical, cultural, and conference operations at the Midland. The ideal candidate will possess excellent executive leadership and organizational skills, as well as have a passion for the performing arts. The Executive Director will develop a strategic plan and oversee day-to-day operations of the theater complex, including performances, marketing, workshops, rehearsals, programs, and special events. The Executive Director will exercise responsible stewardship for all resources within the organization to ensure the optimum balance of artistic quality, financial strength, and institutional integrity.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Act as the primary executive officer of Midland Theater.
Recruit, manage, and supervise all Midland Theater staff, including recruitment, oversight and supervision of the theater volunteers. (50 plus individuals currently)
Report directly to the Midland Theater Board of Trustees for all aspects of the position.
Assist the Board of Trustees in recruiting, educating, and developing new and existing Trustees, and work closely with Board committees and committee chairs to proactively engage members in the service of the theater.
Develop and manage the annual Midland Theater budget to support the organization’s programmatic and institutional priorities.
Manage the overall financial and accounting operations of Midland Theater.
Provide monthly financial statements, including budget performance, cash flow projections, and forecasting to the Board of Trustees.
Provide monthly operational reports and feedback to the Board of Trustees, identifying and communicating potential issues or operational shortcomings.
Manage day-to-day operations of the theater and all associated theatrical, cultural, and conference activities. Manage off-site programming as needed.
Proactively identify, schedule, market and manage Midland Theater programming.
Market, schedule, coordinate, and manage Midland Theater facility rental requests.
Maintain/manage all theater office, performance, storage, and ticketing areas.
Oversee and champion fundraising activities, including individual gifts, Board of Trustee’s gifts, corporate gifts, special events opportunities, governmental support, and foundation grants. Grow the endowment fund to support future programming growth.
Work with the Board of Trustees and staff to create and execute long-term marketing and fundraising/development strategies that will sustain the fiscal and operational viability of the theater in solid & challenging times.
Develop, maintain, and foster relationships with local and regional government agencies, advocacy groups, businesses, arts organizations, and the community at large.
Attend meetings, fundraisers, press conferences, and other events as the public face of Midland Theater.
Oversee contracts as needed, including performers, agents, leases, vendors, insurance, and rights/royalties.
Other duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees based upon business needs.
Flexible schedule, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
Bachelor’s degree in business, non-profit administration, or related field – Masters a plus.
Minimum of 5 years of experience with a non-profit or for-profit organization in a key management/leadership role - Fund Raising/Development experience required.
Strong business skills, including experience in budgeting and financial management.
Experience and capacity to lead, manage, motivate, inspire, train, and collaborate with staff, performers, board members, and volunteers. Positive & supportive outlook.
Strong work ethic and flexibility to deal with unpredictable pressures and a variable flow of work activity with a small administrative staff.
Marketing experience, preferably for a not-for-profit and/or Theater Arts organization.
Experience in fundraising, board relations, marketing, advertising, public relations, conference management, and theater operations is highly desirable.
Excellent communication skills – verbal, written and social media based.
