The Director, Executive Communications will be charged with adapting and amplifying executive content in relevant donor and mass communications. They will also partner with our internal brand team to ensure that executives’ perspectives are represented in brand guidelines and style guides in service of consistency of messaging and look/feel across assets.
There is potential for this position to manage others, including roles that are executing on internal and faculty communications.
Accessing and gathering external content to inform Foundation communications
Convene meetings to absorb and catalogue executives’ thinking around communications strategies, narrative arcs, key talking points, etc. and manage across the organization to ensure staff are accessing and writing with these ideas in mind
Meet with key stakeholders across the organization to collect, catalogue, and regulate communications strategies, narrative arcs, key talking points etc. to ensure alignment with CEO and other executives
Source ideas and information from Stanford School of Medicine and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital; synthesize that content into messaging for use by executives in their communications
Develop sophisticated materials speaking to children’s health in partnership with both Stanford School of Medicine and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital
Establish branding and style guidelines for executives
Gain familiarity with voice and communication styles (and nuances there within) of key executives with a primary focus on the Foundation CEO
Develop a codified style guide for writing and communications that are produced and written from the perspective of those executives
Train and support others across the Foundation to access and adopt style guides
Track and evolve communications style guides over time
Work with communications colleagues to ensure that CEO’s perspective is fully represented in all external-facing writing and collateral
Produce key writing and communications in the voice of Foundation executives
Regularly refresh repository of talking and messaging points for each executive written from their expertise, point of view, and voice
Draft and project manage content creation from the CEO to internal constituents, Foundation board, donor, and public audiences
Donor-facing communication and acknowledgement letters from the CEO
Support high-stakes presentations, including slides and talking points
Draft remarks (slides and talking points) for Foundation-sponsored events and external events where a relevant executive is speaking
Maintain updated biographies of executives
Partner with executives to draft and coauthor thought leadership
Deliver on ad hoc needs (e.g. crisis communications, condolence letters, etc.)
Manage others to successfully write on behalf of executives
Create and maintain templates that other staff (e.g. fundraising gift officers) can access to draft writing on behalf of executives
Create systems and processes to successfully manage content sourcing and version control as collateral is produced
Create systems and structures to scale up correspondence to external constituents (e.g. increase number of meaningful touchpoints to donors)
Catalogue key pieces of writing to create a library of templates that can be accessed to more efficiently create more and better communications
Serve as first point of review for all key communications as a proxy to the CEO and other executives ahead of their review
Manage process for CEO and other executives to review and approve final drafts
Direct in-house and external vendors to produce collateral with exceptional look and feel with expertise in the visual display of information (e.g. charts, graphs, imagery, etc.)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Minimum of 8 years of work experience
Experience producing high quality communications and/or marketing outputs in a high stakes environment.
Our interview process involves a writing simulation relevant to the work in this role which will allow us to better understand candidate skills and for candidates to better understand what it might be like to be in this role

Experience and/or familiarity with fundraising methods and best practices is a plus

Ability to translate complex, technical, wordy content into visualizations and coherent, compelling, and pithy language.
Exceptional capacity to manage visual design: Ability to source and manage visual designers. Possesses knowledge and understanding of best practices of visual design. Ability to manage visual designers to strong outputs, even if not fully an expert in visual design.
