The CUNY Office of Communications and Marketing works in partnership with the Universityâ€™s academic and administrative offices and the 25 colleges to promote CUNYâ€™s unique mission and transformative role as an engine of social mobility. The office includes six divisions: Media Relations, Social Media, Marketing, Multimedia, CUNY TV and Citizenship Now. Together the teams manage all aspects of press and public relations, editorial content, art design, publishing, social media, advertisement, web development, TV, video and podcast production to tell the story of the premier urban public university in the United States.
Under the direction of the Director of Media Relations for the Office of Communications and Marketing, the communications writer will research, report, write, review, edit and produce informative content for press releases, statements, op-eds, talking points, letters, speeches, testimonies, and other communications for internal and external constituencies.
Other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
Prepares sensitive and high-priority communications such as speeches for use by senior management and adapts written style and content to reflect the voice, values and priorities of the Chancellor.
Partners with central administrative leaders and campus communications officers to develop and coordinate text, messaging and announcements that advance their strategic communication goals.
Conceives editorial content for the Universityâ€™s website and works with key staff to develop digital assets.
Conducts substantive information gathering and writing to support the publication of reports, proposals and briefings.
Identifies work generated within the University, such as research papers, grant proposals, abstracts and reports, which would be of interest to education and general news media outlets and, by extension, to external audiences.
Cultivates amiable working relationships with administrators, faculty and staff members across the University to develop knowledge of ongoing, planned and notable/newsworthy programs, courses, and events that would be of interest to internal or external audiences.
Researches, reports and verifies content, and transforms complex concepts into clear and meaningful communications for a variety of internal and external audiences.
Proofreads, fact checks and copy edits releases, articles, booklets, posters, and other written materials for the Office of Marketing and Communications and other University offices and departments.
Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.
In addition to general strengths in collaboration, critical thinking, change management, communications, creativity and problem solving, ideal candidates will also possess the following preferred qualifications:
â€¢ Six to ten years of related writing experience.
â€¢ Advanced degree in English, journalism, public relations, communications or a related discipline.
â€¢ Experience as a successful writer, in a speech writing, journalism, academic or other related context.
â€¢ Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style and punctuation, as well as appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines and standards (e.g. AP).
â€¢ Ability to write quickly, persuasively and clearly on various topics related to public universities and higher education.
â€¢ Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills to appreciate the value of others and work effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders and constituents.
â€¢ Editorial integrity and professional credibility to work discreetly on sensitive assignments, exercise sound judgement, and manage confidential information.
â€¢ Strong research and analytical skills with aptitude for understanding complex issues and the ability to translate and simplify them for various audiences, plus attend carefully to factual details.
â€¢ Strong organizational and project management skills to handle various priorities, accept direction and work independently and collaboratively to deliver high quality work and meet deadlines.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Oversees implementation of communications programs and produces communications in all media to meet a variety of College needs
Provides creative direction for publications and marketing materials, such as catalogs, annual reports, brochures, direct mail packages, print advertising and other marketing materials
Works with College clientele (faculty, administrators, and student representatives) to understand their communications objectives, select appropriate messages, formats, and distribution methods, set production timelines, and establish appropriate editorial and design approaches
Provides creative direction and supervision to external and/or internal creative resources such as writers, photographers, illustrators and graphic designers
Ensures consistent application of standards and guidelines for College materials, such as graphic identity standards
Manages production activities, including creating printing specifications and arranging procurement of services, managing work flows, and production schedules, and assuring a quality finished product
Prepares sensitive and high-priority communications such as speeches for use by senior management
Performs related duties as assigned.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by Emblem Health before the exemption is granted.
