The vice president of communications is an executive role responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating the cooperative’s comprehensive communications, marketing and public relations plans and strategies. Build a strong and distinctive strategic brand platform and manage the production of content, projects and events that ultimately enhances member engagement, improves member experiences, and builds member satisfaction. Lead a communications team and collaborate with the key leadership to tell the cooperative story through the creation of compelling content consistent with the cooperative’s vision, mission and values.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to manage and supervise a team of communications professionals that execute successful communications strategies aimed at telling the cooperative’s story through the creation of compelling content. Foster a team-oriented environment and provide collaboration and communication consistent with the vision, mission, and values of the cooperative.
Capable of leading the development and implementation of proactive communications strategies and campaigns, managing media relations and responses, and taking a lead role in crisis communications.
Possess strong strategic, creative, and project management skills, and the ability to think strategically with effective analytical, negotiation and problem-solving skills. Possess technical skills utilizing traditional marketing and communications strategies and current digital marketing to create, edit and execute effective communication deliverables.
Ability to effectively coordinate available resources and assess, evaluate and acquire external resources.
Possess appropriate skills to communicate effectively with all levels of management, trustees, staff and external individuals and groups; in addition to the ability to develop and maintain relationships with members of the community, media, business and industry.
An excellent working knowledge of writing, an excellent command of written English, AP Style, grammar, punctuation and spelling, for both technical and creative writing, is required. Ability to write quickly, clearly, and concisely.
Exceptional wordsmith who can effectively distill complex information and situations into clear, easily understandable content; as well as possess polished writing skills to use the power of storytelling to engage both internal and external audiences in authentic and compelling ways across multiple platforms.
Highly resourceful and skilled at conducting research to formulate ideas and support writing.
Proven experience and ability to learn and understand technical industry terminology and concepts, properly interview internal and external stakeholders, research and gather information for assigned writing projects.
Originate and prepare written material, create concise, eye-catching, and innovative headlines and body copy. A storyteller at heart, capable of shifting between a variety of writing styles: technical, informative, creative, journalistic, business and social media.
Effectively edit content produced by other employees of the cooperative and collaborate with other departments to create innovative content ideas for various communication channels.
Proficient in the various software programs that produce web/digital/print publications and graphics, including Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Advanced knowledge and skills in the areas of photography, videography, graphic design, and publication design concepts, techniques, standards, and best practices for web/digital/print production. Including the research, writing, design, editing and distribution of brochures, handouts/fliers, ads, newsletters, reports, presentations, print and web graphics, exhibits, banners/signs/posters, invitations, etc.
Must possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment; effectively manage multiple, competing projects and priorities simultaneously; and consistently meet project deadlines in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. In addition, must be organized proactive, creative, collaborative, member-service oriented, and demonstrate initiative and motivation. In addition, must have strong written/verbal communication skills, effective leadership skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
Must be able to learn and acquire, within a reasonable time span, knowledge of Victory Electric and its programs, services and products.
The job may require irregular hours with some night and weekend work with occasional travel to attend training, conferences and meetings, in and out of state.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for creating, implementing and measuring the success of a comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations program that will enhance the cooperative’s image and member experience through writing, content management, graphic design, publication layout and design, photography, videography, website, event planning, public speaking engagements and presentations, media relations, and more.
Oversee communications staff bandwidth, workflow management, project timelines and project management. Review daily workloads and delegate assignments making sure appropriate talent is used and team member workloads are evenly maintained.
Control, maintain and manage the communications budget. Monitor progress and costs incurred in carrying out departmental work plans and budgets. Prepare reports as requested by CEO or board of trustees to assure compliance with program goals and budget levels.
Collaborate with the CEO and executive team on methods and opportunities to enhance the cooperative’s strategic goals as well as potential communications efforts that will improve and enhance member experience.
Advise and assist management in the formation of strategies and policies that will address communication needs and enhance Victory Electric’s communication efforts.
Manage the strategic development of content across platforms.
Lead the development and implementation of a strategic vision for the department, and manage editorial direction, design, style, tone, production and distribution of all cooperative publications to enhance the cooperative’s image and keep consumers informed.
Use industry best practices, metrics, data and insights to help drive communications programs and activities as well as identify how well communication channels are working and where improvements are needed to perform in an ever-increasing digital environment.
Formulate and produce written content to maintain member, interest group, trustee and employee awareness of Victory Electric’s policies, activities, programs, services, accomplishments and position on current issues.
Research various technical and industry topics, research and uncover newsworthy stories, interview key stakeholders, write content with specific audience in mind, ensure writing is accurate and objective, maintain notes in written or electronic form, contribute to content idea generation, and stay up to date with local, state and national industry news and trends.
Create various web/digital/print publications and documents (news releases, website, magazines, media statements, correspondence, social media, brochures, handouts/fliers, ads, newsletters, reports, presentations, print and web graphics, banners/signs/posters, and more) by the assigned deadline. To include research, writing articles, soliciting articles, photography, videography, page/document layout and design, creation of graphics, editing/proofreading, coordinating printing and distribution, and generally ensuring the high quality of any content produced.
Lead the coordination of special events, activities and promotions sponsored by Victory Electric, such as the Pumpkin Painting and Carving Festival, Parade of Lights and Chili Cook-off, youth tour, and the annual meeting.
Communicate with key stakeholders and vendors; schedule, create agendas and coordinate planning meetings; plan and coordinate event logistics; create and distribute event promotion and advertising; organize employee/volunteer recruitment and scheduling; and complete post-event evaluations and reports.
Participate in and/or represent Victory Electric at various events and functions as needed.
Join and participate in various local advisory committees and boards as directed (i.e., Chamber of Commerce) Serve as the cooperative’s liaison to communities throughout the service area by participating in civic and other related organizations to improve the cooperative’s image in the community and utility industry.
Promotional appearances and staffing at area meetings, fairs, trade/home shows, and cooperative member meetings and events. Attend and participate in the cooperative’s annual meeting as required or directed.
Develop, research and organize educational programs and presentations and speak to groups alone or in conjunction with other employees.
Serve as liaison to all Victory Electric employees for proofreading; writing/editing; publication, graphic and document creation; and the development of visual and oral presentations.
Direct and oversee cooperative branding. Assure employees/trustees/departments maintain a cohesive brand and speak in a unified, consistent voice with regards to the activities of the cooperative and its policies, procedures and position on current issues. Promote brand standards and proper use of the cooperative logo on merchandise and in presentations, publications and documents.
Serve as the primary media contact for all general inquiries and manage media relations, media interest in the cooperative, and respond appropriately to media requests. Ensure regular contact with the media and create and/or maintain relationships with the network of local newspapers, radio stations and television stations in Victory Electric’s service area.
Manage cooperative advertising, sponsorships and in-kind donation requests and efforts. Receive, review and determine all advertising, sponsorship and in-kind requests, and communicate with the requestors. Track all advertising, sponsorships and in-kind donations.
Supervise Victory Electric logo merchandise development, purchase and distribution.
Develop and maintain interactive working relationships with allied organizations, government officials and agencies and other influential individuals and organizations to broaden the co-op's public relations base.
Be familiar with, and at all times follow, the employee handbook and the best safety practices set forth in the cooperative's safety manual.
Perform such other duties as may be required or directed. As time permits, it may be required of the employee, by the CEO, to assume responsibilities in other areas of the cooperative during absences or special projects. A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, English or related major.
10+ years of experience in marketing and communications is preferred; specifically experience in managing and executing communications strategies for an electric utility and reporting on cooperative issues, programs, events, rates, power supply, electricity distribution and industry regulations.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

The Victory Electric Cooperative Association, Inc., serves an area of southwest Kansas that includes a diverse agricultural, rural and urban territory. Victory serves Ford and Gray Counties and parts of seven other counties, Kiowa, Edwards, Hodgeman, Finney, Haskell, Meade, and Clark. Victory was organized in 1945 to serve primarily farm residential services.
